SAN FRANCISCO—Even record breaking performaces by
Victoria Clardy (Westminster/Marina HS) and
Rachel Cookus (Thousand Oaks HS) weren't enough to prevent a heartbreaking loss to San Francisco State Saturday night. The Gators took a 28–26, 25–22, 26–24 win in The Swamp.
Clardy broke one record and tied another to lead the Otters. With her sixth block of the night, midway through the second set, Clardy became CSUMB's all–time leader in blocks. She finished the night with nine blocks—tying the Otter record for blocks in a 3-set match—to end the night with 297, surpassing the mark of 295 set by Christine Ricketts.
Cookus, meanwhile, broke her own record for digs in a 3-set match with 28. She set the previous mark with 26 against Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 15, 2014.
But near misses continue to be the order of the day for the Otters, who now have played to deuce in six of the last nine sets.
"I loved the way we played tonight," said Otter Head Coach
Moe Melhart. "We competed and fought the whole time. Our blocking and serving really kept us in the match and our hitters worked exceptionally hard to keep taking big swings. We are excited and looking forward to coming home for a great week in The Kelp Bed."
CSUMB returns home to host its final two matches of the 2015 season. The welcome Cal State Dominguez Hills Tuesday night before putting a lid on the season against Cal Poly Pomona on Nov. 14.
