Women's Basketball | November 23, 2015
SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team looks to continue its winning road ways Tuesday evening when it plays its fifth road contest in as many games at Pac West Conference foe Fresno Pacific University. It will be the first meeting ever between the Otters and Sunbirds in women's basketball.
Tipoff Tuesday will be at 5:30 p.m. FPUAthletic.com will carry a live video stream for a charge of $6.95. The free live audio stream will be on OtterAthletics.com with
Kevin Gilmore calling the action live from the FPU Special Events Center.
SUNBIRD 3–DOT NOTES (1–2, 0–0 PWC): After dropping their first two games at Humboldt State Tournament, the Sunbirds picked up their first win of the season, 61–57, at UC Merced…The Sunbirds' early season numbers are probably a bit skewed due to a tough opening double against Western Washington and Seattle Pacific, each of which resulted in a pair of lopsided defeats…So./G Lee Morgan leads a balanced scoresheet at 10.0 ppg, including 13 points against Seattle Pacific and Merced, which is a team season high…Sr./F Jasmine Shedrick is FPU's top rebounder at 4.7 rpg.
WHEN LAST WE MET: This will be the first–ever meeting between the Otters and Sunbirds in women's basketball.
THIS DATE IN OTTER HISTORY: This will be just the second time the Otters have played on Nov. 24. They'll look for a similar result this time after defeating San Francisco State 49–41 on Nov. 24, 2010. They went on to their best season ever, finishing 27–4.
A HIGH LOW: The Otters scored 78 points in their season–opening loss to Dominican University. The Otters hadn't scored that many points in a loss since dropping an 85–79 decision to Cal State Stanislaus on Dec. 6, 2008. That's a span of 191 games.
OTTERS HEAD (PAC) WEST: The Otters are in a stretch of four consecutive games against Pac West Conference opponents. In fact, five of CSUMB's seven nonconference games will be against PWC competition.
ON THE REBOUND: Jazmine Johnson pulled down a career–high 14 rebounds in the win over Western Oregon. Only Julie Heurung—who twice grabbed 16 rebounds in a game—has posted more rebounds in a game in an Otter uniform.
Oddly enough, three of the Otters who are tied behind Heurung at 14 rebounds are active players: Johnson,
Mykayla Harris and
McKenna Hill.
JAZMINE FROM THE BLOCK: Jazmine Johnson set several school blocking record as a junior in 2014–15, including a school–record six blocks in a game (vs. Sonoma State) and an MB record 40 blocks in a season. Oddly, through three games this season, Johnson is still looking for her first block.
MORE BANG FOR YOUR BLOCK: Jazmine Johnson's 40 blocks worked out to an average of 1.5 bpg, good for the No. 3 spot among the CCAA leaders. In fact, her 40 blocks already rank No. 5 on the Otter career list. Julie Heurung owns the career record with 77 blocks in the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
DORN FROM DOWNTOWN: Junior guard
Victoria Dorn is off to the best start of her collegiate career. She scored a career–high 21 points in the season–opener vs. Dominican University (Nov. 13). Her five 3–pointers as part of that performance rank No. 6 on the Otter single–game list.
THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST: After allowing just 69.4 points per game last season, the Otters are up to their old defensive tricks against by allowing 65.0 ppg through the first three games. The Otters held their opponents under 70 points per game for seven consecutive seasons.
WORKING OVERTIME: With their 63–59 overtime win versus Stanislaus on Jan. 23 last season, the Otters improved to 5–3 in overtime games at the NCAA level. It was CSUMB's first overtime win since defeating Sonoma State 64–59 (1 OT) on Dec. 3, 2011. CSUMB has played only two Division II seasons (2006 & 2012) without playing at least one overtime game.
GO OTTERS!
