SEASIDE, Calif. — It's right back to that other Bay are for the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team, which continues its season-opening 8-game roadtrip Saturday at Holy Names University in Oakland. Both The Otters and the Hawks will enter the game with 1–1 records.
Tipoff Saturday will be at 2 p.m. HNUHawks.com will carry a live video stream. The live audio stream will be on OtterAthletics.com with
Kevin Gilmore calling the action live from courtside.
HAWK 3–DOT NOTES (1–1, 0–0 PWC): The Hawks opened the season at the Chico State Tournament, beating Sonoma State (52–50) and falling to Chico State (40–64)…against Sonoma, the Hawks didn't take their first lead of the night until Tatiana Howard made a layup with two seconds remaining to win the game…against Chico, the Hawks led by six in the first quarter before the Wildcats out–scored them by 30 over the final 30:37 to win in a walk…Howard leads the offense at 12.0 ppg and is the only HNU player scoring in doubles.
WHEN LAST WE MET: The Otters trailed by 10 early in the second half before rallying to take a late lead when the teams met in The Kelp Bed on Nov. 23, 2014. But Holly Shafer knocked down a 3–pointer with nine second remaining to lift the Hawks to the 69–66 upset.
Jenna Bandy led the Otters with 13 points. Tatiana Howard had a 10–point, 14–rebound double–double for HNU.
THIS DATE IN OTTER HISTORY: The last time the Otters played on a Nov. 21 they defeated Northwest Nazarene 57–54 as part of a 3–0 start to the 2009–10 season. London Houchin led the way with 14 points.
A HIGH LOW: The Otters scored 78 points in their season–opening loss to Dominican University. The Otters hadn't scored that many points in a loss since dropping an 85–79 decision to Cal State Stanislaus on Dec. 6, 2008. That's a span of 191 games.
DOUBLE–DOUBLE TIMES FIVE: Jazmine Johnson picked up the first Otter double–double of the season (and the fifth of her career) with 11 points and 14 rebounds in the win over Western Oregon.
ON THE REBOUND: Jazmine Johnson pulled down a career–high 14 rebounds in the win over Western Oregon. Only Julie Heurung—who twice grabbed 16 rebounds in a game—has posted more rebounds in a game in an Otter uniform.
Oddly enough, three of the Otters who are tied behind Heurung at 14 rebounds are active players: Johnson,
Mykayla Harris and
McKenna Hill.
JAZMINE FROM THE BLOCK: After setting a personal record with four blocks in the Feb. 6 win over San Francisco State (now No. 5 in MB history),
Jazmine Johnson exploded for a school–record six blocks the following night in the win over Sonoma State. Julie Heurung (with five blocks on three separate occasions) owned the old record. Johnson finished with 40 blocks for the season, passing Julie Heurung (39 in 2011) for the CSUMB single season record.
MORE BANG FOR YOUR BLOCK: Jazmine Johnson's 40 blocks worked out to an average of 1.5 bpg, good for the No. 3 spot among the CCAA leaders. In fact, her 40 blocks already rank No. 5 on the Otter career list. Julie Heurung owns the career record with 77 blocks in the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
DORN FROM DOWNTOWN: Junior guard
Victoria Dorn is off to the best start of her collegiate career. She scored a career–high 21 points in the season–opener vs. Dominican University (Nov. 13). Her five 3–pointers as part of that performance rank No. 6 on the Otter single–game list.
THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST: The Otters allowed just 69.4 points per game last season. It marked the seventh consecutive season in which the Otters held their opponents under 70 points per game.
WORKING OVERTIME: With their 63–59 overtime win versus Stanislaus on Jan. 23 last season, the Otters improved to 5–3 in overtime games at the NCAA level. It was CSUMB's first overtime win since defeating Sonoma State 64–59 (1 OT) on Dec. 3, 2011. CSUMB has played only two Division II seasons (2006 & 2012) without playing at least one overtime game.
GO OTTERS!
