SAN FRANCISCO – Behind the pitching combo of seniors
A.J. Quintero (Vacaville/Sacramento City College) and
Travis Bonner (Los Gatos/West Valley College), the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team earned a 3-1 CCAA series win over San Francisco State with a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon.
Quintero recorded his first win as an Otter starter, fanning eight batters while giving up six hits and one unearned run. He did not relinquish a walk in his eight innings of action. Bonner, who started the game as a designated hitter, took the mound for the final inning, racking up two strikeouts to earn his second save of the season.
The Otters scattered five hits in the contest. Freshman
Josh Heinz (Santa Clarita/West Ranch HS) went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
CSUMB (9-14, 6-10 CCAA) got on the board in the first inning. Heinz drew a one-out walk. After back-to-back singles by seniors
Mark Hurley (Hollister/College of San Mateo) and
Richie Johnson (San Leandro/San Jose State), Heinz scored on a deep ball to right field by Bonner.
Heinz drove in the eventual game-winner in the top of the fifth. Junior catcher
Shawn Wheeler (Citrus Heights/Sacramento State) drew a two-out full-count walk and advanced on
Brian Hamm's (Pleasanton/Chabot College) infield single. Heinz hit the ball deep left field to score Wheeler, raising CSUMB's lead to 2-0.
CSUMB's second run proved to be essential as SF State (12-10, 7-5 CCAA) scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to 2-1.
Neither team tallied an extra base hit in the nine-inning game.
The Otters take to the road for a four-game series at UC San Diego next weekend.
