ARCATA, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team rode a career–high 19–point performance by senior guard
Chezla Self (Sacramento/S.J. Delta College) to its first road conference win of the season, upending Humboldt State 70–63 Saturday night in Lumberjack Arena.
Self, who surpassed her previous high of 17 at Chico State on Jan. 25, just missed her first career double–double by grabbing a career–high nine rebounds. Sophomore center
Mykayla Harris (Orange/Villa Park HS) did reach double figures in rebounding, following her career–high 14–rebound night Thursday at Cal Poly Pomona with a 10–rebound encore against Humboldt.
CSUMB also got 15 points from
Ashley Morgan (Rohnert Park/Santa Rosa JC) and nine boards from
Holly Holcomb (Ventura/Buena HS).
"I'm incredibly proud of how our girls fought," says CSUMB Head Coach
Kerri Nakamoto (
@CoachKNakamoto). "They made a run at us late second half, but we stayed together and never lost our composure."
Humboldt opened the game with an 11–3 run, but the Otters took control from that point. When Self nailed a 3–pointer nine and a half minutes into the first half to break a 17–17 tie, the Otters took the lead and never again relinquished it.
A late
McKenna Hill (Ventura/St. Bonaventure HS) jumper got the CSUMB lead to 41–27 at the half, marking its biggest halftime advantage since leading Dixie State 61–28 in the season opener back on Nov. 9. The advantage grew to as many as 17 points (51–34) six minutes into the second half before the Lumberjacks began chipping away.
Three consecutive Humboldt free throws cut the Otter edge to single digits for the first time in the second half at 53–44 with 7:24 remaining. The Lumberjacks actually got back to within a single possession when Jain Tuey knocked down a three with 47 seconds to play, trimming the Otter lead to 61–58. But the Otters took care of the ball against full–court Humboldt pressure and made 9–of–12 from the line in the final 42 seconds to end any hopes of a Humboldt miracle.
The Otters made a season–high 31 free throws, the fourth–most in school history and the most since making 32 at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Feb. 22, 2008. They also turned the ball over a season–low 10 times, their fewest since committing six against UC San Diego on Mar. 8, 2013.
"Everyone contributed tonight on the floor and our bench, although a little short, was full of energy and enthusiasm" says Nakamoto. "It was a great way to end a long road trip and lead into a 4–game home stand."
CSUMB returns home to host UC San Diego Thursday in a special 7 p.m. tip–off. The Otters will then host their first nationally–televised game when former Head Coach Renee Jimenez and Cal State San Bernardino visit for an 11 a.m. tip on Saturday morning.
CBS Sports Network will carry the game live on Campus Televideo Ch. 31 (DirecTV 221, Dish Network 158). Check your local listings for the channel on your local cable provider.
