SEASIDE, Calif. — With a national television audience getting its first glimpse of its home court, the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team gave viewers a spirited first half before Cal State San Bernardino's significant depth advantage carried the day in a 67–51 Coyote win Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.
Feeding off the early energy of a boisterous crowd and the CBS Sports Network cameras, the Otters scored the games's first four points and never trailed for the first 14–plus minutes. But early foul trouble and 12 first half CSUMB turnovers kept San Bernardino close.
CSUMB carried the early action and still led by five, 16–11, before an 11–0 run swung the game in San Bernardino's favor. The Coyotes entered the game shooting a CCAA–low 21.8 percent from long range but made 6–of–13 from distance in this one, highlighted by an Alexcia Mack 3–pointer to cap the first half and give San Bernardino a 32–24 lead at intermission.
The game stayed close until midway through the second half, when a tradition 3–point play by Adriana Brodie started a 9–0 run that built the Coyote lead to double digits for the first time at 48–34. The Otters never got closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
CSUMB got 16 points and a career–high four steals from senior guard
Chezla Self (Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta College). Senior forward
Ashley Morgan (Rohnert Park/Santa Rosa JC) just missed adding her first double–double of the season, scoring nine points to go along with a game–high 10 rebounds.
Mack led three Coyotes in double figures and all scorers overall with 18 points.
CSUMB returns to action Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21 and 22 when it concludes the home portion of its 2013–14 schedule by hosting Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus.
