SEASIDE, Calif. -- After grabbing its first CCAA win of the season last weekend, the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team will look to continue its winning ways when it begins a 4-game roadtrip Friday at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson. The Otters will also play at Cal State L.A. Saturday in their final visit to Southern California this season.

As always, fans who can't make it to the games may listen live on www.OtterAthletics.com. Rob Ponce will call the action from courtside. Live stats will be available at www.GoToros.com. Note that there will be no live video availble at Cal State Dominguez Hills, though live video will be available the following night at Cal State L.A. (www.CSULAathletics.com).

After this weekend, the Otters will conclude their roadtrip by traveling to Cal Poly Pomona (Feb. 6) and Humboldt State (Feb. 8). They return to the friendly confines of The Kelp Bed to host UC San Diego (Feb. 13) and Cal State San Bernardino (Feb. 15). The San Bernardino game will be televised live nationally on the CBS Sports Network.

SCOUTING THE TOROS (12–4, 8–4 CCAA): The Toros find themselves in the thick of the CCAA Tournament chase by winning 10 of their last 12 games following a 2–2 start. Monay Lee leads a top–heavy Dominguez Hills scoring chart as one of four Toros averaging in double figures at 15.8 points per game. Tayler Champion chips in 14.4 ppg and a team–high 8.9 rebounds per game. Led by Champion, the Toros are out–rebounding their opponents by a healthy 8.2 rpg.

WHEN LAST WE MET: Sophomore guard Monay Lee became the first opponent ever to score 30 points against the Otters, leading the Toros with a 34–point night in a 65–53 win in The Kelp Bed on Dec. 7. CSUMB shot just 7–of–33 from the floor in the first half as the Toros built a 33–19 lead at intermission. Ashley Morgan (Rohnert Park/Santa Rosa JC) led the Otters with a career–high 21 points.

WHEN LAST WE PLAYED, OTTER EDITION: After knocking on the door several times in recent weeks, the Otters broke through for their first CCAA win of the season by defeating Sonoma State 50–36 in The Kelp Bed. The Otters took the lead for good on a Jenna Bandy (Thousand Oaks HS) jumper 3:06 into the game and never looked back. Alexous Robinson (Dublin/Ohlone College) led a balanced Otter effort with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

WHEN LAST WE PLAYED, TORO EDITION: The Toros completed a sweep of the San Diego/San Bernardino weekend with a 62–54 win at San Bernardino Saturday night. Amber Wharton led three Toros in double figures with 16 points. She knocked down all three of her 3–point attempts as CSUDH hit 46 percent (6–of–13) from long range in the win.

THIS DATE IN OTTER HISTORY: An Otter made five steals for just the third time ever as Helen Suarez tied her own (then) Otter school record with five steals at Chico State on Jan. 31, 2009.

MAKING A NAME FOR HER"SELF": Senior wing Chezla Self has been making a name for herself since joining the starting lineup on Dec. 21. She's averaging 8.9 points per game in her seven starts (tops on the team over that stretch), including career highs of 15 points at UCSD (Jan. 11) and 17 points at Chico State (Jan. 18) in two of her last three appearances.

DROUGHT CONDITIONS I: For the third consecutive game, the Otters went at least 10 minutes without making a field goal (technically 9:59) Jan. 18 at Chico State. This time, the Otters went 0–for–13 from the floor during the cold spell. The Otter defense held Chico to a respectable 15 points over that stretch, but the 15–0 run proved to be the difference in Chico's 14–point victory.

DROUGHT CONDITIONS II: The Otters have had at least one scoreless stretch of six minutes or more during each game of their 10–game losing streak and in 11 of their first 13 games overall.

LET IT RAIN: Although the Otters scored only 50 points in their win over Sonoma State Saturday, they scored at a steady pace throughout the game and never went as long as three minutes without scoring until the game was well in hand.

CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR: The Otters dropped consecutive games by one point (47–46) at San Bernardino (Jan. 10) and two points (40–38) at UC San Diego (Jan. 11). It marked the first time ever that the Otters played consecutive games decided by a total of three points. The previous record for consecutive close games was five points, with the Otters falling at San Francisco State (55–52) and to Cal State Dominguez Hills (52–50) on Feb. 10–12, 2010.

THEY'RE CALLED FREE, BUT THEY'RE COSTLY: They may be called free throws, but they've been incredibly costly to the Otters through the first 15 games. CSUMB has attempted just 166 free throws so far this season (an anemic 11.1 attempts per game). By comparison, CSUMB opponents have attempted 354 (23.6 attempts per game), more than twice as many. To put that imbalance in even greater relief, Otter opponents have made 77 more free throws (243) than the Otters have attempted (166).

DOUBLE–DOUBLE TOIL AND TROUBLE: Alexous Robinson recorded her first collegiate double–double with season highs of 12 points and 12 rebounds in Saturday's win over Sonoma State. The effort was not only Robinson's first double–double, it was the first double–double by an Otters since Gabby Munsch scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in CSUMB's 66–64 NCAA Tournament win over Chico State on Mar. 16, 2013.

MORGAN ON THE REBOUND: Senior forward Ashley Morgan (Rohnert Park/Santa Rosa JC) set a personal record by grabbing 14 rebounds Jan. 18 at UC San Diego. They were the most rebounds in a game by an Otter since Julie Heurung grabbed 16 at Chico State on Jan. 22, 2011. She leads the Otters with three double–figure rebounding games this season.

'TIS BETTER TO GIVE AND RECIEVE: Junior guard Angelique Bailey (Fontana/Etiwanda HS) set personal career highs with seven assists (previous high was five) and three steals (previous high was two) in Saturday's win over Sonoma State. The seven assists matches Nikki Beckman's (Dublin/Ohlone College) effort at Cal State East Bay on Dec. 14 for most by an Otter this season.

98 FOR THE RECORD BOOKS: The Otters set several school records in the season–opening win over Dixie State, most notably by scoring 98 points to eclipse the previous record of 95 set in a 2OT win over the University of Mary on Nov. 15, 2008.

THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST: Defense continues to be the staple of the Otter diet, with CSUMB entering the week allowing a CCAA–leading 59.5 points per game. The Otters enter the week ranked No. 1 in the West Region and No. 22 in the nation in scoring defense.

70 IS THE ANSWER TO EVERYTHING: With apologies to Douglas Adams, the answer to everything isn't 42, it's 70. The Otter saw their streak of 28 consecutive wins when scoring at least 70 points snapped Mar. 1, 2013 in overtime vs. Chico State. In fact, CSUMB is 31–2 all–time when scoring 70 or more points since the 2008–09 season. Prior to the 2013 regular season finale, the Otters hadn't scored 70 in defeat since a 85–79 loss to Cal State Stanislaus on Dec. 6, 2008.

WHY PLAY 40 MINUTES? Second halves have become all but irrelevant when the Otters lead at intermission. CSUMB has won 73 of its last 78 regular season games in which it has led at halftime. Since 2008–09, the Otters have a 79–7 regular season record when leading at intermission. Included in that run was a 52–game winning streak broken when Humboldt State overcame a 32–31 on deficit Feb. 4, 2012 to win 65–51.

GO OTTERS!
