Sophomore middle blocker Victoria Clardy enjoyed a productive Saturday night, putting down kills on seven of her nine swings in a sweep of Cal Poly Pomona.
BOX SCORE
SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team finished its 4–match homestand with a flourish Saturday night by rolling to a 25–17, 25–17, 25–14 sweep of Cal Poly Pomona in The Kelp Bed. By holding the Broncos to 48 total points, the Otters produced their most convincing win since limiting Cal State Stanislaus to 41 points in a sweep on Nov. 4, 2011.
CSUMB (8–4, 2–2 CCAA) received contributions from all of the usual suspects. Junior outside hitter
Julia Ashen (North Salinas HS) went over the 200–kill mark for the season (212) by putting down a match–high 18. Sophomore outside hitter
Jessica Malcolm (Lodi HS) reached double figures for the 11th consecutive match with 12 kills.
The Otters also got seven kills on nine swings from sophomore middle blocker
Victoria Clardy (Westminster/Marina HS) as well as 36 assists and 17 digs from
Kelsey Johnston (Ripon HS).
Hannah Harrer led Cal Poly (3–9, 1–3) with nine kills. Libero Zoe Herrera added a match–high 18 digs for the Broncos.
As the set scores indicated, there wasn't much drama to Saturday's match. The Otters led wire–to–wire in both the first and third sets. Cal Poly showed some grit in the second set, however, using a 6–0 run to take its biggest lead of the match at 14–8. But a pair of Clardy kills served as bookends for a 7–0 Otter run that put CSUMB back on top 15–14. The Otters didn't trail again for the rest of the evening.
CSUMB hits the road for the first time in CCAA play this season when it begins a 5–match roadtrip Tuesday, Oct. 1 at Cal State East Bay. The Otters won't return home until they host San Francisco State Oct. 18.
GO OTTERS!
