High Fives For Otters In Halloween Thriller

Five Otters reach double-figure kills and digs in 5-set win at SFSU

SAN FRANCISCO — Cal State Monterey Bay used a pair of record-setting high fives to hand San Francisco State a 5-set defeat Saturday evening in the Swamp. CSUMB took the win 25–22, 22–25, 32–30, 20–25, 16–14 in its final road match of the season.

For the first time in program history, five Otters collected double-figure kills in the match, led by senior Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) with 16. MPC transfer Kayla Smith (Conway [Ark.] HS) chipped in a career-high 14. Abby Witzansky (West Torrance HS) and Maya Giannini (Palma HS) each added 11 kills. Malia Thorne (Newport Harbor HS) rounded out the quintet with 10.

Kills weren't the only thing that came in sets of five Saturday, as the Otters also tied the program record when five players reached double figures in digs, something that hadn't happened since 2013. Libero Macey Camacho (Chandler, Ariz./Basha HS) led that group with a career-high 26. Sofia MacPherson and Peterson each contributed career-highs of their own with 18 and 17 respectively. Maya Cann (Chico HS/Feather River College) and Giannini each recorded 12 digs.

The Otters also took care of business from the service line. Their 13 total aces rank No. 11 in their record book for aces in a match. Thorne led the way with a career-high five aces, good for No. 4 on the Otter list for aces in a 5-set match.
The Otters needed every one of those numbers to win their tightest match of the season. The first two set were relatively tame, with first the Otters and then the Gators using mid-set runs to pull away for the wins.

The match turned crazy in the third set when CSUMB saved five match points and the Gators saved three before the Otters survived with the 32–30 win. The momentum didn't last, however, as SFSU broke a 17–17 tie in the fourth with a 3-point run en route to forcing the winner-take-all fifth.

The drama was just beginning, as it turned out, after SFSU erased a 7–1 lead to tie the set at 10–10. The Gators saved two match points to send the set to deuce, where kills from Thorne and Smith finally sealed the win.

SATURDAY'S TURNING POINT WAS… At 15–14 in the fifth, Head Coach Courtney Materazzi subbed out Malia Thorne—who was working on a career-high five aces—putting in defensive specialist Gia Hoffman to serve. The move proved to be genius as Hoffman made a diving dig on Aidan Goodrich to keep the point alive for Kayla Smith to put down the winning kill on CSUMB's next swing.

HIGH FIVE, KILLS EDITION… Saturday's win at San Francisco State marked the first time in program history that five Otters reached double-figure kills in the same match. The last time four Otters did it was Sept. 10, 2011, when Melanie Lashbrook (18), Rheann Fall (16), Rachel Freeno (12) and Julia Ashen (10) all did it in a 4-set win over Cal State L.A.

HIGH FIVE, DIGS EDITION… The Otters tied the program record with five players reaching double-digit digs in the win at San Francisco State. It happened a handful of times previously but not since a 5-set win over Academy of Art on Sept. 7, 2013.

CAN YOU DIG IT: CSUMB's 94 digs in Saturday's win at San Francisco State rank No. 20 on the Otter list for digs in a match

THEY'RE ACES… Led by Malia Thorne's career-high five aces, CSUMB served 13 aces, their 11th most in a match all-time. Oddly, that mark ranks only No. 2 this season as the Otters served 16 against Dominican University back on Aug. 29.

OTTERS LEND A HAND… CSUMB'S 67 assists rank No. 4 all-time for assists in a match. CSUMB hasn't passed that many assists since dishing out 68 at Cal State East Bay on Oct. 1, 2013.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Malia Peterson 20.5; KILLS: Malia Peterson 16; BLOCKS: Malia Thorne 5; ACES: Malia Thorne 5; DIGS: Macey Camacho 26.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home to close the season Nov. 7 when they host Menlo College.
