Otters earned a 5-2 win over Humboldt State Friday to open conference play

BOX SCORE SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team earned a 5-2 win in its CCAA opener Friday against Humboldt State at the Otter Sports Complex.

The win improved the Otters record to 2-1-0 while it was HSU's (2-1-0) first loss of the 2013 season. CSUMB outshot the Lumberjacks 17-6 en route to its first CCAA victory.

Five different Otters contributed as CSUMB's set a record for most goals in a single game since moving to NCAA Division II in 2004.

"The team played very well today," said CSUMB Head Coach Erin Reinke. "It was nice to have different players score goals and have assists. We were able to give other players a little more game experience which they deserved."

Sophomore Regan Porteous' (Lodi/St. Mary's HS) cross just seven minutes into the contest set up Hannah Cobb for a 1-on-1 with HSU keeper Kelly Lukas to give CSUMB a 1-0 lead.

Junior Jami Murray (Newbury/City College of San Francisco) picked up her second goal of the season by taking a loose ball in front of goal to center.

Some great footwork by Kristen Womack (Roseville/Woodcreek HS) set up her for a left foot hook to the upper 90 to make it 3-0 in the 58th minute.

After a HSU foul in the box, Porteous was successful on the penalty kick by putting it in the bottom right corner.

HSU got on the board in the 78th minute as Maddi Null scored from 15 yards out with the assist by Sydney Nicholas.

Sophomore Michelle Garrone (Petaluma HS) scored the final goal for CSUMB in the 80th minute with the assist awarded to Sidtia Sidtikum (Escalon/Ripon HS).

HSU rounded out the scoring on the day with a free kick just outside the box by Colette Behen.

Junior keeper Kendra Gillio (San Jose/Valley Christian HS) racked up three saves while Lukas stopped five Otter shots.

"We have had a great full week of practice," Reinke said. "We will enjoy this win and look forward to focusing on playing Sonoma State on Sunday."

CSUMB is back in action Sunday, Sept. 15, welcoming Sonoma State to the Otter Sports Complex. Kickoff is 2 p.m.
