Sophomore libero Rachel Cookus is one of several Otters who will be on record watch during Saturday’s season finale at San Francisco State.
BOX SCORE
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Cal State Monterey Bay finished its Murder's Row of facing three consecutive NCAA Top 15 opponents by dropping a 25–16, 25-22, 25–20 decision to No. 15 Sonoma State Friday night in The Wolves Den.
The win leaves CSUMB (17–12, 11–10 CCAA) stuck on a school–record 17 wins heading into the season finale at San Francisco State Saturday night. Sonoma State won its fourth consecutive match to improve to 24–5 and 17–4 in the CCAA.
Although she finished with just seven kills,
Julia Ashen (North Salinas HS) inched closer to the 500–kill mark for the season. Her school record now sits at 492 with one match remaining.
Sophomore outside hitter
Jessica Malcolm (Lodi HS) led the Otters with 11 kills and now owns 474 in 2013. An extended match Saturday could see not one, but two Otters reach 500 kills in the same season. For comparison, Ashen's school record entering the season was 426 kills set in 2012.
Also on record watch Saturday will be sophomore libero
Rachel Cookus (Thousand Oaks HS). Cookus had 10 digs at Sonoma and now owns 483 for the season. She's looking to become the third Otter to collect 500 digs in a single season. She has a realistic chance to catch Jennifer Holda for No. 2 on the CSUMB list (508 in 2005) and an outside shot a the school record of 518 set by Katie Bos in 2006.
