Servando Perez moves into No. 2 in the CSUMB season record books with 8 goals.
BOX SCORE POMONA, Calif. – Senior
Servando Perez (Guadalupe/Righetti HS) scored a career-best two goals, including the game-winner, as Cal State Monterey Bay beat host Cal Poly Pomona 3-1, in CCAA men's soccer action Friday afternoon.
The Otters (9-4-2, 7-4-2 CCAA) are one win away from tying the CSUMB season record since moving to NCAA Division II in 2004. The Broncos fall to 5-6-4 overall and 3-6-4 in conference action.
"Great game today," said CSUMB Head Coach
Rob Cummings. "I thought we played more of a complete game today than we have previously this season. Pomona is a good team and it was a big road win."
Senior
Juan Montellano (Fresno/Central HS) put CSUMB on the board in the 28th minute, scoring from eight yards out on a rebound from
Anthony Velazquez's (Gilroy HS) shot.
The Broncos evened it seven minutes later when Daniel Garcia Jr. received a long pass and tapped it in.
The game didn't stay tied for long as Perez scored the first of his pair of goals in the 39th minute to put CSUMB back on top. Freshman
Marco Rangel (Hollister/San Benito HS) flicked the ball to Perez who volleyed it to the back of the net.
Perez then staked the Otters to a two-goal lead in the 72nd minute, following up on his own shot from 20 yards out.
The Broncos had the advantage on shots at 17-13, but the Otters won the battle on shots on frame with an 8-7 edge. CSUMB had a dominating leverage with a 6-1 corner kick advantage.
Sophomore
Evan Drake (Sacramento/El Camino HS) tallied six saves in the win.
"We had a complete team effort today," Cummings said. "We will enjoy this win and prepare tomorrow for UCSD on Sunday."
The Otters travel further south to La Jolla on Sunday, Oct. 27 to take on the No. 18 UC San Diego Tritons at 2 p.m.
