Sophomore libero Rachel Cookus' 22 digs Saturday vs. Sonoma State rank No. 4 for digs in a 3-set match by an Otter.
BOX SCORE
SEASIDE, Calif. — No. 11 ranked Sonoma State suffered a 5–set upset Friday night at Cal State East Bay. The Seawolves made certain they were going to avoid a similar fate Saturday night by playing a solid all–around match in a 25–14, 25–18, 25–22 sweep of Cal State Monterey Bay in The Kelp Bed.
Sonoma (16–3, 9–2 CCAA) hit .291 for the match and sided out at a 73 percent clip in the first two sets to stifle any hopes of an early Otter uprising. CSUMB (12–7, 6–5) rallied in the third set, but it was enough only to slow down the Seawolves.
Sophomore libero
Rachel Cookus (Thousand Oaks HS) led CSUMB with 22 digs, good for the No. 4 spot in the CSUMB record book for digs in a 3–set match. Cookus had 21 digs (now No. 6 all–time) in Friday night's sweep of San Francisco State.
The Otters also got a team–leading 12 kills from
Julia Ashen (North Salinas HS), who was the only Otter to reach double figures against Sonoma. Freshman middle blocker
DJ Gresham-Ryder (Stockton/Cesar Chavez HS) added a match–high six blocks for the third consecutive match.
Kelsey Hull led three Sonoma attackers with a match–high 13 kills. Nicole Gragnola led the Seawolf backline with 24 digs.
CSUMB hits the road for its next four matches, beginning Friday night at Cal State Stanislaus. The Otters return home to face Cal State Dominguez Hills Nov. 8 in The Kelp Bed.
