BOX SCORE
SEASIDE, Calif. — Most teams have trouble finding cracks in the defense of the No. 9 Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team. Friday night in The Kelp Bed, Cal State Monterey Bay found them — for about 10 minutes.
CSUMB led by as many as nine point early before the Broncos found their sea legs en route to a 68-50 Cal Poly win.
After shooting well early, CSUMB (6-8, 2-5 CCAA) went cold, finishing the night just 3-for-18 from three point range, missing 12 in a row from beyond the arc at one stretch. That flaw proved fatal when Cal Poly (10-1, 6-1) converted 25 Otter turnovers into 36 points.
The Broncos took their first lead of the game at 18-17 on a Mitchel Anderson three-pointer with 8:27 remaining in the first half. They opened their lead to eight points by halftime, 31-23.
A
Kevin Loustale (Chico/Shasta College) layup provided the first points of the second half and got the Otters back to within 31-25. But they would score just two points over the next six minutes as Cal Poly eased out to a 16-point lead at 43-27. CSUMB would not get closer than 13 points the rest of the way.
Loustale was the only Otter to score in double figures, finishing with 13 points. Senior guard
Brandon Ward (Riverside/Woodcrest HS) chipped in seven points and is now just three points shy of becoming the fourth player in CSUMB history to score 1,000 career points.
Terrence Disdom led Cal Poly with 23 points, three steals and six offensive rebounds.
CSUMB will look to bounce back into the win column Saturday when it hosts Humboldt State in the second game of men's/women's doubleheader action. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Humboldt State is coming off a 78-70 loss at Cal State East Bay Friday night.
