CSUMB runners will face a different climate in the valley at Sacramento

SEASIDE, Calif. — With one race in the books the Cal State Monterey Bay men's and women's cross country team sets their sights to yet another, this time at the Hornet Jamboree in Sacramento on Saturday, Sept. 8. The women will run another 5k while the men run a shorter 4-mile. While the climate is different, Head Coach Greg Rhines believes it will be conducive to better times.

“I will expect faster times than what were posted at the USF race in San Francisco,” says Rhines. The Granite course in Sacramento has been historically fast. It is on decomposed granite with a fairly flat demeanor and a small hill at the beginning and end of the race.

“The weather will be a little different then here at the Bay (and USF), being a little warmer, and a little drier. The beauty of the valley climate is needed pre-race warm up's will be brief and to the point.”

Last weekend the Otters put a dent into the record books when both Ben Garland and Hannah Bell (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) notched the third-best times in CSUMB history in the 5-mile and 5k respectively. More accomplishments may be on the horizon.

“The first race of the season always brings learning reveals in one's racing, which are adjusted and implemented in the next outing. Also, pre-race preparation is going to be the key with proper fuel intake and smart hydration practices being employed. They will be ready,” says Rhines.
