SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.—
There are new faces on both the men's and women's cross country teams at Cal State Monterey Bay and their presence was felt in the first race of the season. Freshman Hannah Bell led the women's team placing 29th while Junior-Transfer Ben Garland paced the men finishing 31st.

Garland ran a 26:29.40 in the 5-mile to lead the men's team to a tenth-place finish while Bell ran a 18:52 in the 5k to lead the women's team to a tenth-place finish as well.

The performances by both Bell and Garland were encouraging to head coach Greg Rhines. “Hannah had an excellent first college race experience boldly leading the race for a time and finishing with the third best CSUMB all-time 5k. Ben danced with the DI boys today running a smart, and fast first time 5 mile. He too ran the third best CSUMB all-time best 5 mile time.”

Tyler Stutzman of Stanford won the men's race with a time of 24:45, he was followed by a trio of his teammates who finished in the top four. The women's race was won by a Cardinal as well as Aisling Cuffe finished with a 17:08.

Overall, it was a positive start for CSUMB. “I'm pleased with the performances today. Most of the student-athletes had course bests today, and the team times dropped too. It's just begun,” said Rhines.

The Otters will hope to build momentum off today's race as they head to the Sacramento State Hornet Invitational next Saturday, Sept. 8.
