BOX SCORE ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team dropped their series opener to Sonoma State 8-5 Friday at Seawolf Diamond.
After the Seawolves jumped out to a five-run lead in the second, junior
Brian Haggett (Hollister, Calif./Sacramento State) got the Otters on the board with a RBI double in the third.
CSUMB cut the gap to 5-3 with two runs in the fifth, taking advantage of a Sonoma State error. Haggett batted in another run with a single up the middle.
The Seawolves responded with three runs in the sixth that was capped by Joel Thys's sacrifice fly.
In the seventh, junior
David Garcia (Gilroy, Calif./Mission College) drove in a run on a single to center field. As senior
Jared DeCastro (Torrance, CAlif./L.A. Harbor College) reached base on a throwing error by SSU's shortstop, Haggett touched home to make it 8-5.
In his five innings of work, senior
Donny Medlinger (San Jose, CAlif./San Jose CC) struck out four batters to finish one shy of tying CSUMB's season record of 63 set by Grayson Adams in 2007.
Both teams registered eight hits with Haggett and DeCastro leading the way for the Otters with two hits. SSU's Jackson Stogner was the lone Seawolf with a multi-hit performance with two.
Sonoma State starter Ian Ocon got a no-decision despite giving up only one earned run because being pulled after four innings of work. Paul Anaya raised his record to 3-1 after 3 1/3 innings of action and Taylor Herbert earned his first save of the season.
The Otters continue their four-game series against the Seawolves Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
