BOX SCORE 2 SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team won its second CCAA series of 2012 with a doubleheader split at San Francisco State Sunday. The Otters dropped game one 13-7 before rebounding with an 8-2 victory.
The Otters passed the season record for wins, picking up their 22nd victory with eight games remaining in their regular season.
Freshman
Chris Blanton (Burlingame, Calif./Burlingame) led the Otters, going 5-of-8 while junior
David Garcia (Gilroy, Calif./Misson College) knocked in five hits with a solo home run.
The Otters return to Seaside for their final home series, welcoming the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills Apr. 20-22.
Game 1: SF State 13, CSUMB 7
CSUMB took a 2-0 lead after scoring runs in the second and third frames.
The Gators unloaded in their side of the third, posting seven runs on five singles and two walks.
The Otters regrouped in the fifth inning by scoring three runs on three hits and two SF State errors.
SF State answered with runs in each the final four innings.
Garcia went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs.
SF State's Dante Smith went 3-for-5 with a run and RBI.
Senior
Aaron Appino (Rancho Cordova, Calif./Sacramento CC) took the loss after tossing 2 1/3 innings and surrendering seven runs.
Game 2: CSUMB 8, SF State 2
After finding themselves in a 2-0 hole entering the fourth inning, the Otters' bats came alive by scoring four runs on three hits and a SF State error. A Blanton walk and singles by juniors
Jesse Olson (Citrus Heights, Calif./Sierra College) and
Jason Merjano (San Ramon, Calif./Seirra College) loaded the bases. Blanton scored on a wild pitch and junior
Ronnie Fhurong (Hollister, Calif./San Benito HS) drew a walk to load the bases once again. Senior
Danny Nelson (Morgan Hill, Calif./San Jose CC) hit a 2 RBI single down the left field line and junior
Tommy George (Elk Grove, Calif./Elk Grove HS) followed with a sacrifice fly.
The Otters put two runs on the board in both the fifth and sixth innings to broaden the gap.
Freshman
Steven Farnworth (Newhall, Calif./West Ranch HS) earned his third win after a five inning performance, giving up only two runs (one earned) and striking out three.
Olson, Nelson and Blanton each registered three hits.
