Otters Swept by CSUEB in Doubleheader

CSUMB falls 7-5 and 3-1 in the twinbill.

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team (15-17, 9-14 CCAA) was swept by Cal State East Bay in a doubleheader Sunday, falling 7-5 and 3-1 at Otter Sports Complex.
 
Junior David Garcia (Gilroy, Calif./Mission College) went 4-for-7 with two doubles on the day. In the opener, senior Jared DeCastro (Torrance, Calif./L.A. Harbor College) registered one run and one RBI while going 3-for-4 at the plate.
 
In game one, the Otters exploded in the second with five runs on singles by Garica, DeCastro, Danny Nelson (Morgan Hill, Calif./San Jose CC) and Matt Urakami (San Jose, Calif./Branham HS).   
 
CSUEB's Andrew Woolfe scored the first four runs for the Pioneers with a sacrifice fly in the third inning and a three-run homer in the fifth.
 
In the sixth, the Pioneers tied the game on Castillo's RBI single and then moved into the lead after taking advantage of a CSUMB error. 
 
CSUEB added another run in the seventh on Eddie Rettagliata's RBI double.
 
Donny Medlinger (San Jose, Calif./Cal Poly SLO) took the loss allowing five runs in 5 1/3 innings. He tied the CSUMB single season record after striking out three batters caught looking.  
 
In the nightcap, the Otters once again took a lead quickly on Garcia's RBI double to center field. 
 
The Pioneers knotted it at one run apiece on Kyle Zozaya's sacrifice fly that scored Woolfe. 
 
CSUEB clinched the doubleheader sweep in the fifth, scoring two runs on a CSUMB error.
 
CSUEB's AJ Gallardo picked up the win after throwing a complete seven-inning game without giving up an earned run.  Unfortunately for starter Jeff Owen (Clovis, Calif./Clovis East HS), he took the loss despite only allowing three hits and no earned runs in his five inning on the mound.
 
The Otters travel to Hayward on Monday for the series finale against the Pioneers. First pitch is 3:00 p.m.
