Chris Blanton's (Burlingame, Calif./Burlingame HS) 4-for-4 performance led the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team in
a 8-4 loss in the series opener against Cal State Stanislaus Friday at Warrior Field.
Stanislaus got out to an early lead, scoring two runs on five hits in the first inning.
The Warriors added a run in each the fifth and sixth innings before posting three runs courtesy of home runs by Colton Beatty and Andy Yingling in the seventh for a 7-0 lead.
The Otters finally got on the board in the eighth, scoring four runs on four hits and a Warrior error. Pinch hitter
Nolan Murray (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) led off with a double and advanced a base on senior
Brian Haggett's (Hollister, Calif./Sacramento State) fly out to right field. After Murray scored on a groundout, Otters got singles out of junior
Jason Merjano and Blanton while freshman
Ty Morris (Royal Oaks, Calif./North Monterey HS) reached on an error. Pinch hitter
Jeff Phillips (Fresno, Calif./Fresno City College) doubled to right field to clear the bases and cut the Warrior lead to 7-4.
Stanislaus answered with a run in the eighth, concluding the scoring for either team.
After playing in only 18 games this season, junior catcher
Jesse Olson (Citrus Heights, Calif./Sierra College) is the new CSUMB single season record book holder after throwing out 14 runners on the bases.
Freshman
Chris Neifert (Scappoose, Ore./Scappoose HS) fell to 1-4 in his second start, his eighth appearance this season. Stanislaus's Bryon Lemon recorded the win after giving up only one earned run on eight hits.
Jordan Long led the Warriors, going 4-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.
The Otters will travel back to Turlock on Saturday, March 22 for a single 9-inning game. First pitch is 10 a.m. CSUMB will host the Warriors in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 25 at 11 a.m. at the Otter Sports Complex.
