SEASIDE, Calif. — After seeing its school–record winning streak snapped in its last game, the No. 6 Cal State Monterey Bay softball team dusted itself off and began a new streak Saturday by sweeping Humboldt State in the opening doubleheader of a four–game set at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB won game one 9–2 and game two 9–1 (5 inn.) to improve to 20–4 overall and 12–2 in the CCAA. The wins also move the Otters into first place in the CCAA after No. 5 Cal State Dominguez Hills dropped a pair Saturday at No. 22 UC San Diego. Humboldt State fell to 8–15 and 2–12 with the losses.

The freshman tandem of Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly HS) and Nina Villanueva (San Diego/Mt. Carmel HS) led the way once again for CSUMB. At the plate, Reinhardt ran her hitting streak to six games, finishing the day 5–for–7 with a double, her NCAA–leading fifth triple, three runs and two RBIs. In the circle, she improved to 10–1 on the season by allowing no earned runs and five hits in a complete game effort.

Villanueva, meanwhile, stroked her team leading seventh home run of the season, a three–run shot, to highlight a four–run first in the opener. She ran her hitting streak to five games by going 2–for–5 with three runs and four RBIs.

Villanueva's blast in game one proved enough support for Reinhardt, who yielded just two fourth inning unearned runs. RBI singles by Jamie Moon (Torrance HS) and Jackie Serna (Corona HS) in the second added insurance before pinch hitter Aina I'Aulualo (Lynwood HS/Cerritos College) singled home two more in the fifth to salt the game away.

Game two got off to a dicey start as sophomore Kylie Linnane (Salinas/Notre Dame HS) had to pitch out of a bases–loaded jam in the first before yielding an RBI single to Tanya Walker in the second. But Villanueva singled home Serna to open the floodgates on a six–run Otter second inning that made Linnane a winner.

Linnane settled down to allow just two hits the rest of the way. Sophomore third baseman Danielle Onken (Oakdale HS) put the lid on CSUMB's sixth run–rule win of the season with a two–run, walk–off homer in the fifth inning.

CSUMB and Humboldt State will conclude their four–game series with a doubleheader Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for noon on the first day of Daylight Savings Time (set your clocks forward one hour tonight).
