TURLOCK, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team continued to hit with authority and added a pair of stellar pitching performances to sweep two games Sunday on the final day of the Best In The West Invitational at Pedretti Park. CSUMB defeated Dominican University 9-1 (5 inn.) and previously undefeated Cal State San Marcos 4-1 to finish the tournament in second place.

CSUMB (4-1 overall) was one of four teams to finish tournament play 4-1, earning second place by the tournament's tie-breaking criteria. Seniors Jamie Moon (Torrance HS), Jackie Serna (Corona HS) and freshman Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly HS) each earned all-tournament honors for their play over the weekend.

The Otters will continue preconference tournament action next weekend, traveling to Las Vegas for the Desert Stinger Classic hosted by Montana State-Billings Friday through Sunday.

CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 9, DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY 1 (5 innings)
Senior pitcher Caitlin Wallace (Beaverton, Ore./Southridge HS) allowed just five hits and a single first inning run to earn her first victory of the season in Sunday's opener against Dominican. Serna gave Wallace all the support she would need with a two-run blast down the left field line in the bottom of the first inning.

CSUMB also got a triple from Moon and the first collegiate home run from freshman Nina Villanueva (San Diego/Mt. Carmel HS). But the hitting star of game one was freshman catcher Nicole Pires (Ontario/Colony HS) who went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and her first home run as a collegian. Her RBI single capped a four-run fifth inning that end the game via the 8-run rule.

CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 4, CAL STATE SAN MARCOS 1
CSUMB overcame some early bad luck to win the game that ultimately decided the tournament championship. Reinhardt played the starring role, allowing no earned runs and fanning seven in a complete game three-hitter to hand the Cougars their first loss of the season.

Momentum seemed to be working against the Otters as they left runners in scoring position in the second, third and fourth innings. San Marcos, meanwhile, took advantage of a two infield errors and a stolen base--all with two outs--to open the scoring in the top of the fourth inning.

Moon's RBI double in the fifth tied the game at 1-1. Walks to Serna and Reinhardt loaded the bases for Villanueva, who smacked a two-run single to left center to drive home Moon and Serna with what proved to be the winning runs.
