Otters Win Season Series Opener Against Westmont

| By:

CSUMB bats come alive in the second game with 11 hits

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 SEASIDE, Calif. – David Garcia (Gilfy, Calif./Mission College) went 2-for-3 with a double and a solo home run as Cal State Monterey Bay crushed the Westmont Warriors 16-4 in the nightcap to win the season series opener. Earlier, the Otters fell 6-4 to the Warriors.

“It's nice to win the series, but we have many areas where we need to improve,” said CSUMB Head Coach Walt White. “In the first game we made some costly mistakes defensively, and we were unable to take advantage of our offensive opportunities.  It's difficult to win games if the execution is not there.  I was very pleased with how we responded in the second game offensively and defensively. A lot of guys contributed and we were able to put Westmont away early.”

For the day, junior Brian Haggett (Hollister, Calif./Sacramento State) drove in a team-high four runs, going 3-for-7 with a double.

Senior Donny Medlinger (San Jose, Calif/Cal Poly SLO) picked up his first win following three scoreless innings after surrendering two runs in the first.

Game 1: Westmont 6, CSUMB 4

CSUMB's ninth inning surge fell short as the Otters fell 6-4 as the Warriors evened the series at one game piece.

With one out in the ninth, CSUMB scored on a bases loaded walk to make it 6-3.  Haggett singled through the right side to bring freshman catcher Jesse White (Salinas, Calif/Salinas High) across the plate.  With the bases loaded, Westmont's closer Michael Kwan forced Garcia to hit into a double play to end the game.

After the Warriors took a two-run lead in the first, CSUMB got on the board three innings later with a run off two hits. The Otters evened the score at 2-2 on an unearned run in the fifth.

The Warriors regained the lead in the seventh, scoring four runs on three hits and two CSUMB errors.

Game 2: CSUMB 16, Westmont 4

In a game that featured 19 Otters, CSUMB racked up 16 runs on 11 hits and eight walks.

Once again, Westmont took a quick 2-0 lead but the Otters answered this time with six runs of their own in their half of the first inning.  With the bases loaded, Jared DeCastro (Torrance, Calif/L.A. Harbor College) hit a Texas Leaguer into center field.  Then Garrett Gemgnani (Los Angeles, Calif/Cluver City HS) was nicked in the back and awarded first base to force in a run.  Garcia followed with a 2 RBI double down the left line.  After Germgnani scored on a groundout, junior Ronnie Fhurong (Hollister, Calif./San Benito) tripled off the right center wall to score Garcia for the final run of the inning.

After a scoreless second inning, the CSUMB bats caught fire again with five runs on four hits. Garcia went long over the left field wall to spark the Otters,  With two outs, Fhurong singled and scored on Tommy George's (Elk Grove Calif./Elk Grove) triple to left field. Two walks later, Haggett connected on a bases clearing double to put CSUMB up 11-2.

CSUMB continued their scoring run in the fourth, scoring two of the four runs on a single by Chris Lopiccolo (Marina, Calif/UCSB). The other two runs came from a walk and a hit batter with the bases loaded.

After Westmont put up two more runs before Jeff Phillips (Fresno, Calif./Fresno City College) lead off the fifth for CSUMB with a pinch-hit home run.

Medlinger struck out five batters and walked three in his four innings of action.

The Otters travel to Fresno on Tuesday, Feb. 7 for a doubleheader against the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds.  First pitch is 4 p.m.
