SEASIDE, Calif. — Rarely can a team be held to five hits and still experience an offensive explosion. That, however, is exactly what the 13th–ranked Cal State Monterey Bay softball team did to complete a sweep of visiting Cal State San Bernardino Saturday.
The Otters scored 11 runs on five hits—three of them home runs—to win game two of Saturday's twin bill, 11–1. They scored 10 runs a bit more conventionally in the opener to post a 10–7 win.
The 21–run outburst helped CSUMB (15–3, 7–1 CCAA) run its winning streak to seven games. It also completed a series sweep of San Bernardino (7–10, 3–5). The Otters won 5–2 and 14–0 Friday.
Sophomore pitcher
Kylie Linnane (Salinas/Notre Dame HS) earned her first collegiate save, working out of a bases loaded, one–out jam in the seventh inning of the opener. There would be no save opportunity in the nightcap, however, as she ran her streak of consecutive innings with allowing an earned run to 15 2/3 to improve to a spotless 6–0 for the season.
The teams traded big innings in a rollercoaster opening game.
Cori Reinhardt's (Riverside Poly HS) two–run triple highlighted a four–run third inning that put the Otters on top 4–1. But Patti Mazner's two–RBI double capped a three–run Coyote fifth that tied the game.
The Otters responded quickly.
Jamie Moon (Torrance HS) led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk then capped a six–run rally with a two–run single to give the Otters a seemingly comfortable 10–4 lead. San Bernardino touched the Otters for three in the top of the seventh and loaded the bases before Linnane made her first appearance of the day. She needed just eight pitches to get the final two outs and secure the win.
Game two began in as wacky a fashion as game one ended. San Bernardino used a sacrifice sandwiched between two errors to score without a hit in the top of the first. The Otters also didn't need a hit to break the seal, parlaying a walk, a sacrifice, a wild pitch and a Moon sac fly into the tying run.
While Linnane silenced the Coyote bats the rest of the way, the Otter offense used the long ball to break the game open.
Ashley Andruski's (Poway HS) first collegiate home run capped a three–run second before
Jackie Serna's (Corona HS) fourth of the season produced a two–run third. A bases loaded walk to Serna drove in one run in the fourth before freshman
Nina Villanueva (San Diego/Mt. Carmel HS) hit her fifth home run of the season—and her first collegiate grand slam—seal the win.
All that was left at that point was to see if Linnane could complete the five–inning no–hitter. But Coyote freshman Victoria Lievanos dribbled a 1–2 pitch through the left side to open the fifth before a two–out bunt single by Charlotte Galzote forced her to settle for a two–hitter.
Andruski,
Skyler Valdivia (Beaumont HS) and Serna were the only Otters to hit safely in both games Saturday. Serna led the offense by finishing the 3–for–5 with a double, a home run, three runs and four RBIs.
Galzote (3–for–6) was the only Coyote to hit safely in both games.
CSUMB continues its 12–game homestand by hosting Cal State East Bay for a doubleheader Friday (Mar. 4) at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
