BOX SCORE 2 SEASIDE, Calif. – Senior
Aaron Appino (Rancho Cordova, Calif./Sacramento CC) went seven-plus scoreless innings to give the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team a 2-0 victory in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader against Cal State San Bernardino. The Otters fell 11-4 to the Coyotes in the second game.
Juniors
Brian Haggett (Hollister, Calif./Sacramento State) and
David Garcia (Gilroy, Calif./Mission College) led the Otters at the plate today. Haggett went 5-for-8 with a run while Garcia racked up four hits including a double to go with his two runs and two RBIs.
Appino, last week's West Regional Pitcher of the Week, delivered on the mound once again for the Otters. He struck out four and walked only two while relinquishing six hits in his 7 2/3 scoreless innings. Freshman
Chris Neifert (Scappoose, Ore./Scappoose HS) came in to finish the eighth and junior
Harold Zosel (Pleasanton, Calif./San Jose CC) earned his fourth save after forcing three consecutive groundouts.
The Otters enter the series finale against CSUSB on Sunday, Feb. 26 (11 AM) with an 11-6 overall record, 4-3 in CCAA action. The Coyotes are 6-5 and 3-4 in conference play.
Game 1: CSUMB 2, CSUSB 0
The first game started out a true pitching duel between Coyotes' Cory Caruso and Appino. The Otters broke through in the fifth with a run, taking advantage of two CSUSB errors.
The Otters added an insurance run in the eighth when
Chris Lopiccolo crushed a triple off the right center wall to drive in Haggett.
CSUSB's Anthony Smith went 2-for-3 but was stranded at first both times.
Game 2: CSUSB 11, CSUMB 4
The Coyotes scored in the first five frames to take a 10-0 lead highlighted by Eric Dow's two-run homer.
Garcia led off the sixth with a single and scored on freshman
Garrett Gemgnani's groundout.
After the Coyotes added another run in their side of the seventh, CSUMB tried to rally in their final chance by scoring three runs. Garcia hit a two-out 2 RBI double to center field and Haggett followed with a RBI single to bring in Garcia.
Freshman
Steven Farnworth (Newhall, CAlif./West Ranch HS) took the loss after 1/3 inning while Josh Lee earned his first win after six innings and only one run.
