BOX SCORE

SEASIDE, Calif. — It's a long road from now to march, but the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team began its journey with a big step forward, racing to a big early lead then cruising to a 104–52 win over visiting Pacifica University Sunday night in The Kelp Bed.

The 104 points scored were the most by the Otters in the Rob Bishop era, eclipsing the 99 points scored in a 2009 win at Cal State Stanislaus. They also rank as the third most scored in a regulation game in CSUMB history.

James Albert vs Pacifica
“We learned tonight that we can play like we practice,” said Head coach Rob Bishop. “I also learned that we have a very unselfish bunch. We had 28 assists on 38 baskets. I don't care what type of game you're playing, those are outstanding numbers.”

Eleven different Otters scored against Pacifica with four players reaching double figures. Senior guard Brandon Ward led the way, continuing his assault on the CSUMB career–scoring record with a game-high 19 points. He moved from No. 9 on the Otter scoring list to No. 7 with 859 points as he chases Matt Dalhamer's record of 1,075.

Freshman guard Alex Fertig did a nice job in his first collegiate performance, chipping in 15 points and four assists. Senior guard Geoff McIntosh led both teams with a career-high five assists while senior center James Albert added 12 points on a perfect 5-for-5 night from the floor.

Sunday's game was essentially over before eight minutes had elapsed in the first half. The Otters began with a flurry, opening with a 33-4 run. Pacifica never got to closer than 27 again in the first half. The advantage was 31 points by halftime and grew steadily from there, eventually reaching 54 (104-50) before settling on the final margin.

CSUMB (1-0 overall) heads to the great white north to play its next three games at the GCI Alaska Invitational in Fairbanks Nov. 15-17. The Otters open with host Alaska Thursday before meeting Colorado Christian and Oklahoma Panhandle. They'll return home to host Dominican (Calif.) University Nov. 24.

Pacifica (0-2) heads back to Southern California to play at West Coast Baptist Monday night. Shaun Weeks led the Gladiators with 16 points and nine rebounds.
