SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.-
The Cal State Monterey Bay cross country program started the season on the right foot Saturday morning in the USF Invitational at Golden Gate Park.

"I am very pleased with both teams performances today,” says Head Coach Greg Rhines.

Competing against NCAA Division I programs, the women saw a sixth place finish, and the men took ninth place.

“The women's team ran the slow course with a vengeance and the first 5 Otters ran sub-6 minute 1st miles,” says Rhines.  “Piper had an impressive first race as an Otter setting a new school 5k record in the process."

With a final score of 183, the women finished first among Division II programs. Junior Piper Delaney (Medford,OR/Boise State) led the Otters with a finishing time of 18:49, followed by freshman Cristina Hernandez (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) crossing the finish line at 20:05.

"The men's team was introduced to the five mile race distance today, and they didn't back down to the challenge. It was a learning experience which will help improve all their race performances".

The men where led by junior Cameron Cruse (Seaside/MPC) with a finishing time of 27:23. CSUMB received a final score of 241, just below UC Merced with 235.

"Both teams enjoyed their best team times today, and we a just getting into the fire of competition."
