Otter Split Against Fresno Pacific

SEASIDE, Calif.
– The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball split today's doubleheader with Fresno Pacific, picking up a 6-2 victory in the opener before falling 7-4 in the finale.  

"This series gave me, as the coach, an opportunity to evaluate our players and I feel I have learned a lot about our team," said head coach #Walt White#. "We are going to continue to improve as a team and as a program."

Junior #Danny Nelson# and  sophomore #Tommy George# led the Otters with two hits apiece for the day. Nelson recorded a triple and crossed the plate three times. Senior #Greg Fujii# also hit a triple and scored three runs.

The Otters take the week off before returning to the diamond on Saturday, Feb. 19 to host Patten University in a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m.

Game 1: CSUMB 6, FPU 2

After CSUMB starting pitcher #Tony Hernandez# retired three batters in a quickly matter, the Otters put up three runs on the board. Fujii lead off with a walk and stoles second.  Fhurong's double up the middle brought Fujii across the plate. Nelson singled through the left side and designated hitter #Randall Packard# drew a walk to load the bases.  The three runners advanced a base on a balk by FPU's Matt Mazzoni.  George connected on a sacrifice fly to bring home Nelson to make it 3-0 Otters.

CSUMB added to its lead in the second inning.  Fujii tripled to right center to drive in catcher Jace Fanner.  Fhurong hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Fujii. Nelson tripled to center field and scored on sophomore #Alex Mangubat#'s single to left side.

The Sunbirds put up a run in the top of the third.  Blaine Taylor was rewarded first after being hit and advanced to second on a balk.   After stealing third, he scored on a single to third base.

FPU added a final run in the top of the ninth on two hits.

The Otters out hit the Sunbirds 7-5

Junior #Paul Brock# picked up his first win of the season after throwing six innings in relief.  He allowed one run on five hits and struck out six batters.

"We played exceptionally well in game one, getting great outings from Hernandez, Holland and Brock," White said. "It is a great sign of what is to come from this program."

The Sunbirds scored a run in the top of the second and CSUMB answered with a run in the bottom of the frame.  FPU's Alec Mehrten reached first on a CSUMB error and scored on Trent Soares's  double through the right side.

Junior #Chris Lopiccolo# grounded out to second, scoring junior Jared DeCastro who reached on a single.

CSUMB took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning. Fhurong hit his second sacrifice fly for the day, scoring Fanner who reached on a walk.  Nelson singled down the left line to bring Fujii across the plate.

FPU's Wes Dorrell homered to right field to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning.

The game which was scheduled to be only seven innings was forced to go into the eighth where FPU put up four runs on three hits and one CSUMB error. 

Junior #David Holland# took the loss, pitching two innings and allowing three earned runs. FPU's Michael Rivera recorded the win in relief.
