SEASIDE, Calif. -- A game that seemed destined for overtime at the least turned with the sound of a whistle Sunday as Humboldt State converted a late penalty kick into the only goal of a 1–0 HSU victory. Friday, two set pieces led to the only goals of a 2–0 Sonoma State win.
“Against Sonoma State in the second half we stuck to our game plan and didn't give up a goal and we had scoring opportunities,” says Head Coach
Erin Reinke. “If we just hadn't given up two goals off of corner kicks. We are giving ourselves a chance to be successful on the field.”
Now, the Otters will hit the road for their final two matches away from Seaside this week when they travel to play at Cal State Stanislaus Friday (Oct. 21) and at Chico State Sunday (Oct. 23). Both matches will be part of men's/women's doubleheader action.
The Otters will be looking to avenge a pair of early season home losses this weekend at a couple of venues that have not been historically kind to CSUMB. The Otters are 0–5 all–time at Cal State Stanislaus and 0–6 at Chico State. CSUMB nearly pulled off the upset at Chico in 2008 before falling 2–1 in overtime.

SAVINGS TIME: The Otters came out of the weekend with a couple of statistical pluses thanks to the goalkeepeing tandem of junior
Diana Zambrano (La Puente/Mt. SAC) and freshman
Kendra Gillio (San Jose/Valley Christian HS). Zambrano and Gillio each made six saves Friday versus Sonoma State, setting the high water mark (12) for CSUMB this season. Gillio, meanwhile, allowed just one goal in 135 minutes of action to lower her team–leading goals against average to 1.34.
A TALE OF TWO PENALTIES: As it turned out, penalties played a key role in both matches against Humboldt State this season. In the first meeting (Sept. 16 in Arcata), Gillio stopped a penalty to preserve a 1–0 CSUMB win. Sunday, HSU's Tamra James won the PK battle, scoring to give the Lumberjacks a 1–0 win.
