Otters Give Strong Performance At Bronco Invitational

Cross country runs at Baylands Regional Park leading into the CCAA championship race next weekend.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.—The Cal State Monterey Bay cross country program participated in the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational along with 800 other competitive runners in the open event. Both the men and women teams ran with 20 teams, the women finishing fourth and the men eighth respectfully.

"It was a very positive day for both teams,” says Head Coach Greg Rhines. “The women's and men's squads came to race today, and they did not disappoint. I am very proud of CSUMB Cross Country."

Junior Piper Delaney (Medford, Ore./Boise St.) got the top finish for the Otter women in the 5k race with a fifth place finish among collegiate runners with a final time of 18:29. Freshman Cristina Hernandez (Bonita Vista/San Diego) saw a top 30 finish running the course in 19:07 earning a 15th place finish followed by classmate Jennie Yeaman (Escondido/Mission Hills) in 29th place at 19:32.

Delaney broke the All-time 5K school record time and the next three women to finish surpassed previous record times.

On the men's side, junior Cameron Cruse (Seaside/Monterey Peninsula College) earned CSUMB's top finish, placing 20th on the 8K course in 26:10. Junior Ray Garcia (Lincoln/Stockton) finished just ten seconds later at 26:20.

Cruse, Garcia, and freshman Karson Hayden also out ran the 8K record, Cruse outrunning his previous school record by 30 seconds.

The Otters will compete in the California Collegiate Athletic Association conference championships hosted by Sonoma State on October 22nd in Santa Rosa, CA.
