LOS ANGELES --- Cal State Monterey Bay played Sonoma State even through four quarters and two overtime periods before finally falling in sudden death as Sonoma State's Jenna Bole scored with 2:03 left to lift the Seawolves to a 9-8 win and a seventh place finish at the 2008 Western Water Polo Association Women's Water Polo Championship at Loyola Marymount University on Saturday.
#Chelsea Laning# scored her third goal of the game with 4:25 left in the fourth quarter to give CSUMB a 7-6 lead. Sonoma State answered at the 1:58 mark when Samantha Mullins scored the third of her four goals to send it to overtime. The Seawolves looked to have it won in the final seconds of regulation but Laurel Stricklin's shot from point-blank range was saved by CSUMB goalie #Jenna Beer#. Beer was huge in net, making 14 saves.
In overtime, Laning scored at the 2:03 mark of the first overtime period to put CSUMB up 8-7. Sonoma State answered in the second overtime frame with Mullins' fourth goal at the 2:07 mark to knot the game at 8-8 and send it to sudden-death overtime.
Sonoma State improves to 14-17 overall with the victory and CSUMB finishes the season at 18-14. The Otters finished eighth in the tourney, one spot better than last season's finish.
