SEASIDE --- Cal State Monterey Bay led 8-6 late in the third period, but CSU Bakersfield scored four straight goals and defeated the women's water polo team 12-10 Saturday at the CSUMB Aquatics Center.
CSUMB's #Chelsea Laning#, of Morgan Hill, scored five goals in her final home match of her career to finish with 74 on the season. The two-time All-American entered the day the third-highest scorer in the NCAA this season and first all-time.
Senior goalie #Jenna Beer# made another 10 saves and added in a couple of steals and an assist. She will be among the top five or 10 leaders in saves this season in the NCAA. For several other seniors, it was their final home match as well.
#Erin Lee# finshed the final season with 14 goals, 8 assists, 9 steals this season; senior #Stephanie Salvi# had 22 goals, 23 assists and 15 steals this season; #Leilani Kekuewa# scored two goals on Saturday, finishing with 7 goals, 11 assists and 3 steals this season, and #Christy Thompson# scored a goal and made three assists on Saturday, increasing her season totals to 16 goals and 35 assists and 23 steals.
Freshman #Nikki Smart# will be one of the young players the Otters look to in the future to replace the output of the above players. She was second on the team in goals with 39 goals scored.
The Otters, who finished the season 17-11 and 3-5 in conference, will next play in the Western Water Polo Associations 2008 Women's Water Polo Championships hosted by Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles from April 25-27.
