SEASIDE --- The Otters hosted two Division I women's water polo teams on Thursday, nearly spoiling the trip from Rhode Island for Brown University in a 13-14 loss and then, less than three hours later, were beat 15-8 by Hartwick College from Oneonta, New York.
Cal State Monterey Bay trailed through most of the match against Brown, but took a 10-9 lead with 6:35 left in the fourth period when #Leilani Kekeuwa#, with one second left on the shot clock, fired a shot from nearly a third of the length of the pool away from the goal for a score.
It was the only lead CSUMB held in the game, but the Otters never trailed by more than three and tied the score three times in the final period. #Chelsea Laning# scored her fourth goal of the game with 4:32 left in the game to tie the score at 11, but Brown scored three more goals in the next 2 ½ minutes and CSUMB couldn't keep pace. Brown's Lauren Present scored six in the match.
The Otters jumped back in the pool about an hour later to face Hartwick, ranked No. 14 in the nation. CSUMB's #Stephanie Salvi# scored the first goal just 12 seconds into the game, but once Hartwick tied the game at two halfway through the first period, the Otters would never lead again.
CSUMB fell behind 6-2 at the half, but scored the first three goals of the second half to close within a goal. #Cookie Cuzynksi# completed the run with her lone goal of the match with 3:03 left in the third. But Hartwick went on to score the next four goals and finished the game with a few more late scores to widen the margin.
CSUMB goalie
Jenna Beer made 25 saves between the two games. Laning scored six goals on the day to lead the women and
Nikki Smart and Salvi both finished the afternoon with three.
“It was tough competition and we need it to get ready for Stanford on Sunday,” said head coach
Gary Figueroa.
Stanford University, ranked No. 2, will come to Seaside on Sunday to play the Otters. The game will begin at noon at the Aquatics Center off Second Street.
