ALAMEDA, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's golf team closed out competition at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout, highlighted by a hole-in-one that led to one of the lowest individual rounds of the tournament. The Otters finished tied for eighth at 28-over at the Corica Golf Club.
"We have a really young team this year that will learn a lot from this tournament," CSUMB head coach Jim Ragan said. "We did not play up to our capabilities, but that is part of the process. We look forward to putting in the work to keep getting better. Cathy bounced back with a strong 68 and an exciting 6-iron hole-in-one today. It was a great one to see!"
Senior Cathy Tong delivered the round of the day for the Otters, firing a four-under 68 to vault up the leaderboard and finish the 36-hole tournament in 20th. Tong set the tone, starting the day with a four-under 32 in her first nine that included a hole-in-one on the par-3 16th. She only had one blemish on her scorecard as it came on the final hole of the round.
Her 68 on the par-72, 5,803-yard layout marked one of the top rounds in the field and was just one stroke away from equaling her school record 67.
Sophomore Morgan Pittman added a three-over 75 in the second round, posting a 6-over for the tournament to place 28th.
The first-round leader for the Otters, newcomer Khivi Kaur, carded an eight-over 80 to place 41st overall at 9-over.
Classmate Esther Sheu turned in a seven-over 79 in the final round to finish the 36 holes at 15-over to place 67th.
Freshman Audrey Cheng rounded out the Otters' lineup with a 10-over 82. Competing as an individual, Maisy Lu improved on her opening round with a four-over 76.
The Otters will continue their spring season on Monday, March 9, at the Fujikura Invitational held at the Shadow Ridge Golf Club.
