Strong Team Effort Has Otters Leading At Fujikura

Wilhelm Berg von Linde is in fourth place at 6-under through 36 holes

February 12, 2024

VISTA, Calif. — A strong team performance that saw all five Otters contribute scoring rounds has the Cal State Monterey Bay men's golf team leading by five strokes after the opening 36 holes of the Fujikura Invitational Monday at Shadowridge Golf Club.

The Otters were one stroke back at the end of the first round, when they shot 1–under 287 in the morning. As the wind picked up in the afternoon, scores got even lower, with CSUMB leading the way with the day's best round of 7–under 281.

Senior Wilhelm Berg von Linde led the way with rounds of 68 and 71 (–6) to claim fourth place. Juniors Tommy Kimberling (Rancho Cucamonga/Los Osos HS) and Jack Deaner (Carmichael/Jesuit HS) are tied for eighth at 2–under.

Junior Simon Björken rallied from an opening-round 78 to card a 68 in the afternoon and climb up to 23rd. Freshman Will Musson (Clovis North HS) recorded the final scoring round in the morning and is tied for 48th at 8–over.

"The second round was more of what I'm looking for because if you look at all five players, we made very few bogeys," says CSUMB Head Coach Jason Owen. "With the quality of players we have, I expect more rounds like that."

CCAA rival Cal State East Bay is in second place at 3–under heading into the final round. Colorado State Pueblo and Chico State are tied for third at 2–under.

Chris Chomyn (–9) of Stanislaus State shot a sizzling 64 in the morning and leads Nathan Simpson of San Diego State by two strokes entering the final round. Stanislaus' Nathan Jetton (–6), Berg von Linde (–5) and San Bernardino's John Kim (–4) round out the Top 5.

The Fujikura Invitational concludes with 18 holes Tuesday at Shadowridge.
