September 23, 2023

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay cross country teams returned to the Mangrum Track Course on the campus of Cal State San Marcos for the first time since the 2021 CCAA Championship Meet to compete in the Cougar Challenge Saturday morning. Competing against some of the top teams in the West Region, the Otter men finished 10th and the women finished 15th.

Junior Jaime Gonzalez (Camarillo HS) paced the Otter men for the third time this season, finishing 30th in the 181-runner field with a time of 25:29.1. That was nearly a full minute faster than his previous best on the course.

Senior Connor Farrow (Modesto/Beyer HS) also set a course PR by 31 seconds when he finished 52nd in 25:56.4.

Saturday's race was the second collegiate 8K for eight Otter freshmen. William Trowbridge (Santa Cruz HS) led that octet with a time of 26:52.9. Jake Walton (Livermore (Granada HS) finished close behind in 26:53.8.

As has become the Otter standard, junior Lisa Irvine (Roseville/Woodcreek HS) led the women for the third time this season and for the ninth consecutive time dating back to the first race of last season. Irvine placed 51st overall in the 184-runner field with a time of 22:36.2. That was 6/10ths of a second faster than her course PR set as a freshman in 2021.

Freshman Daniela Munguia (Clovis North HS) continues to push Irvine, finishing as CSUMB's No.2 runner for the second consecutive race. She completed her first collegiate 6K in 22:39.1 to place in the top third of the field in 55th position.

Junior Angelee Berganio (Santa Clarita/Canyon HS) also earned a spot in the top half of the field by placing 78th in 23:13.2.

"I was so happy for my student–athletes today. It was a faster course, with pleasant weather, and the results definitely showed up," said CSUMB Head Coach Greg Rhines. "We are getting the wheels rolling and as we ready for the CCAA Championship in a month."

The Otters will take next week off before closing their regular season on the Speedway Meadows Course of Golden Gate Park at the S.F. State Invitational Oct. 6.
