Angelee Berganio breaks eight year old program 800m record in season finale

May 14, 2023

AZUSA, CALIF. –
CSUMB Track and Field's season came to an end on Saturday at the Cougar Athletics Stadium, as four Otters competed in the APU Last Chance Meet.

Angelee Berganio (Santa Clarita/Canyon HS) stole the show in her final race of the year, breaking CSUMB's eight year old 800m record set by Hannah Bell in 2015. Berganio threw down a time of 2:16.10, 1.74 seconds faster than her previous PR, and 1.54 seconds faster than Bell's previous program record

Mina Tsai (San Jose/Santa Teresa HS) set a new 100m dash PR of 12.21 seconds. It was good for second fastest in program history, and was 0.08 seconds off of the program best mark. Tsai also put up an impressive 25.23 second 200m. This was just 0.01 seconds off of her own program record.

Rounding out the group of Otter competitors were Taylar Yost (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield HS) and Mackenzie Caprino (South Salem HS). Yost ran her first collegiate 800m as well as her signature 400m hurdles, while Caprino capped her season with another strong performance in the 3000m steeplechase.

"There are so many good reasons why this season is so high on my 'best ever' list." stated Coach Greg Rhines. "First, the women did their absolute best each and every outing, from MPC until Azusa yesterday. The coach can't ask for more commitment than that. Second, never have I witnessed so many personal records and school records reset than in this season. Another, and one of the most important is this team is ONE! They are very supportive of one another. They are there for each other at all times. Selflessness seems to be one of the prerequisites in this team's dynamic...I believe one has to have grit to be a successful collegiate student-athlete. I cannot even count how many times I saw it show up in the meets this season!...I am already looking forward to next spring and whatever awesome things come with it!"
