ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The young Cal State Monterey Bay men's golf team saw its season come to an end Saturday with a 15th place finish at the NCAA West Regional at Foxtail Golf Course.
Sonoma State roared back late to win the team title after winning a playoff with Western Washington. The other three teams advancing to the NCAA Championship Tournament were Chico State, Oklahoma Christian and Simon Fraser University.
Mauricio Figueroa of Texas A&M International and Liam Duncan of Colorado State Pueblo advanced to the Championship as the low scoring individuals from non-advancing teams.
The Otters never found a rhythm over the 54-hole event. After starting with a 295 and and climbing within four strokes of a Championship berth, they fell out of contention with a 303 Friday before recovering with a final round 297.
Sophomore
Simon Björken (Hudiksval, Sweden) carded five birdies en route to a an even par 72 and a 14th place finish. He gave a strong, consistent tournament effort with rounds of 71, 73 and 72 to finish at even par 216.
Fellow sophomore
Jack Deaner (Carmichael/Jesuit HS) had three birdies of his own, finishing a 2–under Saturday to earn a Top 20 finish (17th) as well. Sophomore
Tommy Kimberling (Rancho Cucamonga/Los Osos HS) had an up-and-down round Saturday. He claimed for birdies and finished the day 2–over.
The experience of earning an NCAA Regional berth should serve the young Otters well in 2024. Four of the Otter starters this season were sophomores while the fifth was a freshman.
