Otters Put Together Strong All-Around Showing at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational

Mina Tsai and Taylar Yost combine to break three school record as Otters put together one of their best performances on the season

April 09, 2023

BERKELEY, CALIF. –
Cal State Monterey Bay Track and Field had arguably their strongest performance of the season, as 13 Otter athletes combined to set three new program records and 11 new PRs Saturday at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational.

Mackenzie Caprino (South Salem HS) set the tone early, smashing her previous 3000m steeplechase best mark, shaving nearly 3.5 seconds off of her previous best mark and placing third at the event. The rest of the Otters followed suit, with personal best after personal best.

With less than a month until the CCAA Championship, the Otters are really looking to be in top form and ready to perform with the conference's best.

SETTING THE TONE… As per usual, Mackenzie Caprino was the first Otter on the track for the 3000m steeplechase, and she started the Otters off with a stellar performance. The sophomore set a new PR in the event of 11:17.88, besting her previous career best mark of 11:21.24. Caprino is now the second fastest Otter to run the event, behind only Brooke Roy '22. Mackenzie now owns the second fastest 3000m steeple time in the CCAA.

THE DYNAMIC DUO… Mina Tsai and Taylar Yost continue to rewrite the CSUMB track and field record books, as the duo combined for three new school records today. Tsai was the first to break a record in Berkeley today, running a 58.35 400m, besting her previous record by a full second. Tsai now owns the eighth fastest time in the CCAA. Next up was Yost in the 400 hurdles. Like Tsai, Yost also broke her own record, with a time of 1:04.95, beating out her previous best mark of 1:05.17. This mark was good for seventh fastest in the CCAA thus far this season. Tsai would then finish out the day on the track for the Otters in the 200m with a program record time of 25.25, downing her previous best of 25.77. That time is good for tenth best in the conference.

PRs IN THE 800m, 1500m… The Otters success today was not just limited to the steeple, sprints and hurdles, as multiple athletes starred in the middle distances. Angelee Berganio ran the second fastest 800m in program history with a time of 2:18.29, seventh best in the CCAA. In the 1500m, a trio of Otters (Ali Keith, Kayla Young, and Lisa Irvine) broke the five minute mark, with Young and Irvine both recording their PRs. Also picking up PRs in the 1500m were Kseniya Nikanorov, Carly Zahrt, and Audrey Garcia.

THE FINAL WORD… "What a day! Everyone won't pr every meet, however it sure does seem like that has been happening! I am so proud of this team and how they work so hard for these results. I'm excited for what's next!" – Head Coach Greg Rhines

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will compete in two events next week, the Mt. SAC Relays and the Johnny Mathis Invitational. The Mt. Sac Relays will take place from Apr. 13-15 in Walnut, California, while the Mathis Invitational will be hosted by San Francisco State from Apr. 14-15.
