Tsai and Yost Continue to Rewrite Otter Track History at Mustang Invitational

Sprint and hurdle records continue to fall in final meet before CCAA Championships

April 26, 2023

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIF. –
CSUMB Track and Field made their way to San Luis Obispo for the second time this season, sending a group of 15 student-athletes to the Miller and Capriotti Athletic Complex to compete in the Mustang Invitational.

As has become an expectation at nearly every Otter meet this season, two more program records were set, as Mina Tsai (San Jose/Santa Teresa HS) broke her own program 200m record by 0.03 seconds, while Taylar Yost (Wake Forest, N.C./Wakefield HS) broke her own 400m hurdles record by 0.01 seconds.

The Otters will now spend the next couple of weeks making final adjustments in preparation for the 2023 CCAA Track and Field Championships, which begin on May 4.

ALL BY THEMSELVES… With their record breaking performances, both Mina Tsai and Taylar Yost sit in a league of their own in the CSUMB record books. Not only do Mina and Taylar each own the fastest 200m and 400m hurdle times in program history, they each own the top five fastest times in those events.

DEJA VU… For the second consecutive meet, the Otters picked up wins in both the 3000m steeple and the 4x400m relay. Mackenzie Caprino continued to assert her dominance in the steeplechase event, as she already owns the second fastest time in the conference. Meanwhile, the 4x400 team of Angelee Berganio, Ali Keith, Taylar Yost and Mina Tsai bested the next closest team by nearly seven seconds in their winning effort.

A SLEW OF TOP-10 FINISHERS… The Otters had top-10 finishers in nine different events in San Luis Obispo. Mina Tsai took fourth in the 100m with a PR time of 12.32, while placing second in the 200m with her program record breaking performance. Angelee Berganio placed third in the 800m, while Kseniya Nikanorov took home fifth in the 5000m. Taylar Yost not only took home third place honors in the 400m hurdles with her record breaking performance, but also placed sixth in the 100m hurdles. Danielle Yost placed ninth in the 400m hurdles. Mackenzie Caprino won the 3000m steeplechase, while the team of Berganio, Kieth, T. Yost and Tsai won the 4x400m relay, with a team of Kayla Young, Natalie Harper, Danielle Yost, and Mackenzie Caprino placed third. Rounding out the group of top-10 finishers, Cierra Verdone placed eighth in the triple jump as the Otters only field competitor at the meet.

THE LAST WORD… "Even in challenging conditions, more pr's were set today! This is an amazing fact in part because very few student-athletes from any school set records today. I value grit in my student-athletes. I believe one has to possess this ingredient to do exactly what the MB women do each and every meet. CCAA's here we come!" – Head Coach Greg Rhines

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will next be in action at the CCAA Track and Field Championships, hosted by Cal State San Marcos. The event will kick off on May 4 and will run through May 7.
