April 16, 2023

SAN FRANCISCO –
Cal State Monterey Bay Track and Field athletes found themselves in front of the packs in multiple events Saturday at the Johnny Mathis Invitational at Cox Stadium on the campus of San Francisco State University.

The Otters picked up two race wins, two new program records, and five new PRs in an effort that ranked them third out of a field of 17 schools, including CCAA foes Sonoma State, San Francisco State and Cal State East Bay.

The Otters now hold top-10 marks for the CCAA in eight different events this season.

THE BIG WINNERS… The Otters picked up two race wins at the Mathis Invitational. First, it was Mackenzie Caprino, who set a personal record in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:16.98. Caprino was nearly 10 seconds faster than the next closest runner. She now holds the second fastest steeple time in the CCAA, and is just 15 seconds off from hitting a national qualifying mark. Also picking up a big win on the track was the 4x400m team of Angelee Berganio, Ali Keith, Taylar Yost and Mina Tsai. The group put together the best 4x400m time in program history, crossing the finish line at 4:02.75, nearly three seconds faster than the next closest group.

NOT FAR BEHIND… The Otters also received big points from Mina Tsai, Angelee Berganio and Taylar Yost in the 200m, 400m, 800m and 400m hurdles. Tsai finished second in both the 200m and 400m, running the second fastest 200m in program history (25.44) and the fastest 400m in program history (58.33). Berganio placed third in the 800m with a time of 2:19.16, the second fastest of her career and fourth fastest in program history. Yost continued her terrific season in the hurdles, placing second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:05.10, the second fastest of her career as well as the second best in program history, while also placing fourth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.17.

OTHER NOTABLE MARKS… Freshmen Kseniya Nikanorov and Carly Zahrt both had strong days in their signature events. Nikanorov was just off of her personal best mark in the 5000m, but still placed seventh overall with a time of 18:11.05, the fifth fastest in program history. Zahrt won her heat in the 1500m race, smashing her previous PR by nearly 10 seconds with a time of 5:07.61.

THE LAST WORD... "The 'personal best' train is still rolling on this team, and the MB record books are being rewritten once again! One of the greatest rewards for me is when good people do good things, just like today!" -- Head Coach Greg Rhines

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will next be in action at the Mustang Invitational, hosted by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The event will take place on Friday, April 21.
