Two New School Records Set as Otters Compete in Cal Poly Open

Caprino and Tsai etch their names into CSUMB Record Books

March 04, 2023

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIF. –
Meet number two of the season was one to remember for the Otters, who set two new school records at the Cal Poly Open Friday at Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex.

Things got started with the field events, as Mina Tsai (San Jose/Santa Teresa HS) headlined a group of three Otter jumpers, winning the long jump with a leap of 5.17m (16'11.5"). Tsai set the program record at the Otters last meet, and was just half an inch off of that mark today.

Over to the track, Mackenzie Caprino (South Salem HS) became the first Otter to run a 2000m steeplechase, and was the only participant in the race, putting up a time of 7:39.08. Also making her mark in the distance events was Kseniya Nikanorov (Castle Rock, Colo./Castle View HS). Nikanorov broke her previous personal record in the 3000m race, setting her new PR mark at 10:38.92.

After getting a short rest following her outstanding long jump performance, Tsai was back in action again, this time shattering the CSUMB 200m dash record, winning the race with a time of 25.77. Mina now owns four of the five fastest 200m times in program history.

Other top finishers for the Otters included 400m winner Taylar Yost (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield HS) and 1500m winner Ali Keith (Billings West HS).

"The women were very in their first official meet of the season!" noted Head Coach Greg Rhines. "Mac set the tone for the day in the track events with a solo steeple, and she did great! It continue with strong times in the 1500m. Then the day just went very well from there on in the sprints, 800m and jumps!"

The Otters will next be in action on Saturday, Mar. 11 at the Aggie Invitational, hosted by UC Davis.
