Deaner Leads Rally As Otters Finish Third In The Desert

Sophomore Jack Deaner places fourth at Desert Invitational

March 01, 2023

LA QUINTA, Calif. — Led by a final round 69 from sophomore Jack Deaner (Carmichael/Jesuit HS), 20th-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay compiled Wednesday's low round to earn a third place finish at the Desert Invitational on the PGA West Mountain Course.

Deaner's 69 not only matched the lowest round of the day, it was his lowest in 41 rounds at the collegiate level. He has shot 70 multiple times.

The Otters played the final 18 holes at 1–over 289, the best round of the day by two strokes. Playing in conditions that included a local wind advisory, CSUMB was one of only five teams in the 16–team field to navigate the final round at less than 10–over.

"I'm very proud of this young group, they are learning how to battle," said CSUMB Head Coach Jason Owen. "I hope they continue to put themselves in this position, so awesome. I'm especially proud of Jack Deaner and his fourth–place finish."

Deaner was one of only five players in the red Wednesday. Fellow Otter sophomores Simon Björken (Hudiksval, Sweden) and Liam Allder (Sundsvall, Sweden) nearly joined him with each carding 73. Sophomore Tommy Kimberling (Rancho Cucamonga/Los Osos HS) closed the Otter scoreline with a 74.

Deaner finished the tournament a 2–under 214, good for sole possession of fourth place. Cal State San Bernardino's John Kim took medalist honors at 6–under 210.

Björken earned his third Top 10 finish in five starts this season, placing seventh at 1–over 217. Allder and Kimberling just missed Top 20 finishes of their own, tying for 21st at 4–over.

As a team, the Otters climbed to a third place finish at 7–over 871. Included in that finish were key head-to-head wins over No. 11 Sonoma State (5th) and No. 13 Western New Mexico (8th).

No. 32 Cal State East Bay took top honors, placing three strokes better than CSUMB at 868. The 16–team field included 12 of the nation's Top 50 NCAA Division II teams and eight of the Top 30.

CSUMB heads north through the Mojave Desert to continue its weeklong roadtrip at the Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Mar. 5–7. Boulder Creek Golf Club is hosting the 54–hole event.
