Otter women earn title in the 6K race with Lis Irvine placing second

September 17, 2022

CARMEL, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's cross country team christened the Palo Corona Cross Country Trails course with a victory in the first–ever collegiate meet held at the venue Saturday morning.

The Otter women held off Cal State San Bernardino and San Francisco State for the team victory. CSUMB's men's team tied San Francisco State with 34 points each, although the Gators earned the team title by virtue of the better sixth place finisher.

"You can only do an inaugural race once. Our teams did great!," says CSUMB Head Coach Greg Rhines.  Individually, they crushed it. What a way to remember the first Otter Invite I am so happy for our student–athletes."

Cal State San Bernardino senior Alexis Wallace ran away with the women's individual title, navigating the 6K course in 22:10.7. It wasn't enough to overcome a strong team effort by the Otters, however, who claimed five of the next six places to win the team championship over the Coyotes, 23–41.

Sophomore Lisa Irvine (Roseville/Woodcreek HS) earned her highest collegiate finish by placing second overall in 23:00.4. Freshman Ali Keith (Billings, Mont./Billings West HS) placed second in 23:17.3. Freshman Kseniya Nikanorov (Castle Rock/Castle View HS) and sophomores Mackenzie Caprino (Salem, Ore./South Salem HS) and Angelee Berganio (Santa Clarita/Canyon HS) closed the Otter scoreline by placing fifth through seventh respectively.

Otter sophomore Jaime Gonzalez (Somis/Camarillo HS) won the men's race with a time of 25:44.9. Seniors Nathan Garcia (El Centro/Southwest HS) and Connor Farrow (Modesto/Beyer HS) finished close behind, placing fourth and sixth respectively.

Freshman Alexis Lorenzana (Roseland University Prep) (13th) and senior Luis Contreras (Indio HS) (16th) also placed in the top half of the 36–runner field.

CSUMB will take next weekend off before heading down the coast to take part in the Waves Invitational Oct. 1 at Pepperdine University in Malibu.
