Otter Men, Women Finish Second At CSUSB Coyote Challenge

Jaime Gonzalez leads the men; Lisa Irvine leads the women

September 11, 2022

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay cross country teams kicked off the 2022 campaigns in fine form with a pair of second place team finishes at the Cal State San Bernardino Coyote Challenge Saturday on the CSUSB Campus Course.

Both teams finished behind only NCAA West Regional rival Concordia. Amongst the teams the women beat were CCAA rivals San Bernardino and Cal State L.A. The men also defeated Cal State L.A.

"We came out blazing for our first meet," says CSUMB Head Coach Greg Rhines. "There are many new faces who ran their first collegiate race today, they all did very well."

The top Otter finish of the day belonged to sophomore Jaime Gonzalez (Camarillo HS), who PRed by nearly a minute with a 25:38.9 to finish fourth. It was the top finish by an Otter men's harrier since Connor Henderson won the Sonoma State Invitational in October of 2015.

Seniors Nathan Garcia (El Centro/Southwest HS) and Connor Farrow (Modesto/Beyer HS) joined Gonzalez in the Top 10, placing fifth and ninth respectively. Garcia ran his fifth consecutive sub–26 8K with a 25:47.8 while Farrow ran his second fasted 8K ever at 26:10.9.

Joining that trio in the Top 20 were newcomers Alexis Lorenzana (Santa Rosa/Roseland University Prep)  (12th) and Alex Fernandes (San Ramon/Doughtery Valley HS) (15th) and senior Luis Contreras (Indio HS) (16th). In fact, all seven Otters placed in the top half of the 57–runner field.

On the women's side, junior Lisa Irvine (Roseville/Woodcreek HS) led CSUMB by placing sixth in the 62–runner field with a 19:12.2, her collegiate best for a 5K. Freshman Kseniya Nikanorov (Castle Rock/Castle View HS) and junior Mackenzie Caprino (Salem, Ore./South Salem HS) joined Irvine in the top 10, placing ninth and 10th respectively. Nikanorov ran her 5K PR with a 19:24.2 while Caprino missed her PR at that distance by 5/10ths of one second.

"In addition to the newcomers, my returners just simply tore up the course on this warm and humid morning," added Rhines. "What was one highlight for me is how each team adjusted to the conditions and ran right through them."

The Otters return to action next weekend when they host the CCAA Championship Preview Meet at the new Palo Corona cross country trails in Carmel on Saturday (Sept. 17).
