Otters, Cougars Split Twinbill to Set Up Championship Game

CSUMB wins 15-8, falls 6-5 at NCAA Regional

AZUSA, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay exploded for 15 runs in the opener, but Azusa Pacific pulled off a late rally in Game 2 to force a winner-take-all championship game at the NCAA Division II West Regional Friday at the Cougar Baseball Complex.

CSUMB (38–16 overall) raced to a 10–1 lead en route to a 15–8 win Friday afternoon. Four outs from the regional title in the nightcap, however, the Otters saw APU score single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to pull off 6–5 win to force the winner-take-all finale Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Otters got home runs from Jason Ajamian (Pasadena/CSUN), Jacob Martin (Bloomington HS/Chaffey College) and Chris Rubottom (Long Beach CC) to score in double figures for the 15th time this season. Rubottom added a pair of doubles while Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) chipped in a 2–run triple as part of the season–high 21-hit attack.

Senior lefty Joseph Standley (Nolanville, Texas/Hope Christian HS) cruised through the first six innings before yielding seven runs in the seventh. But Parker Fokken and Chris Tonna combined to strike out three in two innings of scoreless relief to seal Standley's seventh victory (7–1) of 2022.

Game 2 saw the Otters take leads of 4–1 and 5–3 before APU kept its season alive with single runs in each of the last three innings. The Cougars pulled to within 5–4 on an Otter error in the seventh, tied the game on a Casey Dykstra home run with two outs in the eighth and scored the winner on a sac fly in the ninth.

Dykstra, APU's starting center fielder, came on to pitch around a 2–out walk in the Otter ninth and earn his fourth save of the season.

Ajamian homered for the third consecutive game in the nightcap. Nico Hartojo added his sixth homer of the season while sophomore Carlos Drain made his first collegiate hit a solo home run. Chase Lindemann and Guerra each collected doubles as five of CSUMB's seven hits in the game went for extra bases.

Ryan Platero struck out a season-high 11 against just one walk in a no decision.
