Game Recap: Baseball | | Kevin Gilmore (@OtterKevin)

Otters Open NCAA Regional with 6–3 Win

Two bombs, McRae’s arm lead Otters past Western Oregon

AZUSA, Calif. — No. 24 Cal State Monterey Bay used a pair of long balls and the strong left arm of senior Ethan McRae (Hanford HS/Fresno CC) to advance at the NCAA Division II West Regional with a 6–3 win over Western Oregon Thursday at the Cougar Baseball Complex on the campus of Azusa Pacific University.

With the win, CSUMB (37–15) advances to Game 3 Friday where the Otters will face host Azusa Pacific. APU will play Western Oregon Friday night in what will be an elimination game for the Wolves.

McRae (7–1) gave some ground early as WOU touched him for single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings. But he settled down late, retiring the last six batters he faced as well as eight of the last nine. He finished with seven strikeouts while allowing just one walk.

First baseman Jason Ajamian (Pasadena/CSUN) carried the big bat for the Otters, driving in four runs, including a 3–run shot in the sixth inning that gave CSUMB the lead for good at 5–3. Left fielder Nathan Flores (Orange Lutheran HS/Santa Ana College) added a pair of hits, including his sixth homer of the season.

Ajamian gave the Otters an early lead with an RBI single in the first inning. WOU scrapped back to take a 2–1 lead before Flores led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo shot.

The Wolves briefly retook the lead with a double, sacrifice and sac fly in the sixth. But Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) and Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) led off the home half of the sixth with singles to set the table for Ajamian. The first baseman's team-leading eighth homer of the season gave the Otters a lead that wouldn't be threatened.

Hunter Harris (Newark Memorial HS/Chabot College) added an RBI knock in the sixth to close the scoreline. Chris Tonna (Fremont/Chabot College) pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Hunter Harris's 2–out single drove in Jacob Martin with the sixth Otter run. Western Oregon never got the potential tying run as far as the on deck circle over the final three frames.

FOR (REGIONAL) OPENERS… Playing in their fifth NCAA Regional, the Otters improved to 3–2 in Regional openers with Thursday's 6–3 win over Western Oregon.

LUCKY No. 7 FOR McRAE… Ethan McRae improved to 7–1 with Thursday's win over Western Oregon. He ties Jeffrey Ahern (7–0 in 2019) and Jake Paolinetti (7–1 in 2011) for No. 4 on the Otter single–season wins list.

MIGUEL IS A HIT… Brady Miguel picked up his 78th hit of the season with a sixth-inning single in Thursday's win over Western Oregon. He needs one more hit to tie TJ Dove (2019) for No. 2 on the Otter single-season list.

MAKING A RUN AT IT… Brady Miguel and Chase Lindemann each scored in Thursday's win over Western Oregon to continue their "run" at the CSUMB record for runs in a season. Miguel scored his 57th run and Lindemann scored his 56th. TJ Dove set the Otter record with 62 runs in 2018.

TONNA SAVES THE DAY… Chris Tonna recorded his career–high sixth save in Thursday's win over Western Oregon. That ties him with Paul Brock (2011) for No. 6 on the CSUMB single-season list.

EXTRA BASES… DOUBLES: Chase Lindemann (10). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Nathan Flores (6), Jason Ajamian (8)

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play host Azusa Pacific Friday at 2 p.m.
