SEASIDE, Calif. — Freshman shortstop
Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) added to his quickly filling trophy case by bringing home the NCAA Division II West Region Player of the Year Award from the Conference Commissioners Association (CCA).
Miguel, who was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association MVP last week, helped CSUMB (36–15 overall) win its third CCAA title in the last eight seasons while hitting .397 and leading the league with six triples and a .506 on base percentage. He is the first Otter ever to be named player of the year by both organizations.
Joining Miguel on the first team were senior pitcher
Joseph Standley (Nolanville, Texas/Hope Christian HS) and junior designated hitter
Jacob Martin (Bloomington HS/Chaffey College). Standley enters the NCAA West Regional with a 6–1 record and a 2.04 ERA. Martin is hitting .346 with team highs of 14 doubles and 60 RBI. Both Standley and Martin were first team All–CCAA selections as well.
CSUMB opens NCAA West Regional play as the No. 3 seed and faces No. 6 seed Western Oregon (34–18) in this afternoon's opening round. The winner of will advance to Friday while the loser will play and elimination game against No. 2 seed Azusa Pacific (34–16) tonight. Click on the

CSUMB WEST REGIONAL NEWS AND NOTES
ALL–TIME SERIES vs. WESTERN OREGON… CSUMB leads 9–7 (9–7 home / 0–0 away / 0–0 neutral).
CSUMB AT THE NCAA TOURNAMENT… CSUMB will be making its fifth appearance in the NCAA Baseball West Regional (2013, 2016, 2018, 2019). The Otters are 3–8 in their previous regional appearances.
HEAD COACH WALT WHITE… Is in his 11th season as CSUMB's head coach…CSUMB is his first collegiate head coaching position… sports a 281–203 (.581) record…took over a team that won just eight gameS the season before his arrival and needed just three seasons to turn it into CCAA Champions (2013)…Otters need three wins to match the school record for wins in a season (39) set in 2013 and 2018.
HOME AWAY FROM HOME… CSUMB is 5–4 all–time at the Cougar Baseball Complex. One of those victories came over Chico State at the 2018 NCAA West Regional.
BABES IN THE WOOD… Not only is CSUMB the youngest NCAA member university (founded in 1994), but the Otter baseball program is by far the youngest in the CCAA. CSUMB's first season of baseball was 2006. The Otters did not become postseason eligible until 2008.
COMEBACK KIDS… Cal State Monterey Bay has come from behind to win in its final at bat eight times so far in 2022.
HAVING A GRAND OLD TIME… The Otters have hit a school–record six grand slams entering the regional. The previous school record was three set in 2016. Chris Rubottom leads the way with two slams. The others have been provided by Nico Hartojo, Jacob Martin, Brady Miguel and Cooper Smith.
DOUBLE THE FUN… The Otters have score double–digit runs 14 times in 51 games so far in 2022. That mark ranks No. 2 in Otter history. The 2018 club set the school record with 19 such games.
LOSING STREAK, WHAT'S THAT? The Otters enter the regional having dropped their last three games. It's CSUMB's first streak of three losses since Feb. 15–21, 2020. The Otters have not dropped four consecutive games since Apr. 28 – May 5, 2017.
BRADY'S THE BEST… Freshman shortstop Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) became the first Otter baseball player named CCAA MVP when he picked up the award last week. Miguel had one of the most dominant seasons by an Otter in program history. He led the CCAA by hitting .422 in league action. He also led the conference in on-base percentage (.522), runs (50) and triples (five) while finishing No. 2 in steals (16).
SO IS COACH WHITE… For his part, Head Coach Walt White earned his third Coach of the Year award since being named the CSUMB skipper for the 2011 season. He also got the nod after leading the Otters to CCAA titles in 2013 and 2018.
ALL–CCAA… Joining Miguel and White on the All–CCAA first team starting pitcher Joseph Standley, closer Chris Tonna and designated hitter Jacob Martin. Earning second team honors were first baseman Jason Ajamian, starting pitcher Ethan McRae and relief pitcher Parker Fokken. Catcher Hunter Harris, second baseman Nico Hartojo, outfielders Chase Lindemann and Chris Rubottom and starting pitcher Ryan Platero.
