Otters Upset Twice On Day 2 Of CCAA Championship

CSUMB falls to Dominguez Hills and San Bernardino; awaits NCAA Regional call

CHICO, Calif. — No. 12 Cal State Monterey Bay fell in a pair of upsets to bow out of the CCAA Championship Tournament Thursday at Nettleton Stadium. The Otters yielded three ninth–inning runs in a 5–3 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills before dropping a 6–3 decision to Cal State San Bernardino in the nightcap.

CSUMB (36–15), the CCAA regular season champion, will return home to await the announcement of the NCAA Regional selections Sunday evening. The Otters are expected to receive one of three at–large berths to the tournament that begins next week.

Run–scoring singles from Nathan Flores, Jacob Martin and Nico Hartojo looked to be enough to advance CSUMB into the winner's bracket int he afternoon game against Dominguez Hills. But after the Toros scored the tying run off first team All–CCAA closer Chris Tonna, a 2–out dropped fly ball error allowed Dominguez Hills to take a 5–3 lead.

CSUMB pulled one back in the bottom of the ninth before leaving the bases loaded to end the game.

Things didn't get better for Otter fans after dark as San Bernardino became the first team to score three runs in a start against first team All–CCAA lefty Joseph Standley. Nevertheless, Standley buckled down to keep the Otters in the game until a 2–run single by Flores and a sacrifice fly by Chris Rubottom tied the game at 3–3 in the fifth.

But the Coyotes responded with three against the Otter bullpen in the seventh and, this time, the Otter offense didn't have an answer.
