Otters Are Comeback Kids In Doubleheader Sweep

Two huge rallies give Otters 18-12, 7–6 sweep of Cal State L.A.

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay made a pair of remarkable comebacks to sweep a doubleheader from Cal State L.A. and take sole possession of first place in the CCAA race Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex.

The Otters rallied from deficits of 7–0 and 10–3 to earn an 18–12 win in the opener. They then scored twice in the bottom of the seventh before Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) delivered a 2–out, walk-off single in the 12th for a 7–6 win in the nightcap.

The victories lift CSUMB's record to 26–10 overall and 21–6 in the CCAA and give the Otters a 1 1/2 game lead in the conference race with 13 games remaining.

The drama came in the nightcap, where the Otters entered the seventh and final inning trailing 6–4. Chase Lindemann (Saugus HS/Hartnell College) reached on an error to lead off the inning before back-to-back doubles by Miguel and Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) off L.A. closer Mikell Chavez forced extra innings.

Chavez followed with four scoreless innings to keep the Golden Eagles in it, but he was out–dueled by Otter relievers Ubaldo Romo (Buhach Colony HS/Hartnell College) and Chris Tonna (Fremont/Kennedy HS/Chabot College), who combined for six innings of 2–hit, shutout ball.

That eventually got the CSUMB to the 12th, where Lindemann drew a 2–out walk before stealing second. Miguel followed by lining a 2–2 pitch into left that allowed Lindemann to score standing up.

It didn't look as if Otters fans would be celebrating early as L.A. hung seven runs on the home team in the first inning of the opener. After three innings, the Golden Eagles led 10–3. But CSUMB put up a six spot in the fourth inning to pull to within 10–9 and turn the game on its ear.

An RBI single by Jacob Martin (Bloomington HS/Chaffey College) in the seventh gave the Otters their first lead of the game at 13–12. That was part of a late surge that saw CSUMB score the game's final nine runs.

Miguel finished the day 8–for–12 with three doubles, five runs and a pair of RBI. Guerra and Martin also finished the doubleheader with five hits apiece. Nico Hartojo (Arvada, Colo./MPC) had three hits and four RBI in the opener.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Nico Hartojo scored on a passed ball to cap a 4–run seventh and give the Otters a 16–12 lead.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Brady Miguel delivered the walk-off single to score Chase Lindemann in the 12th inning.

WORKING OVERTIME… Not only was CSUMB's 12–inning, 7–6 victory in Game 2 its longest game of the season, it was the longest Otter game since a 12–inning, 5–4 win at Chico State on Feb. 27, 2016. Ironically, that game also was scheduled for seven innings.

BRADY IS A HIT… Brady Miguel tied a CSUMB record with five hits in Saturday's opener, finishing 5–for–6. He becomes the seventh player in Otter history to accomplish the feat. Chase Lindemann did it earlier this season against Azusa Pacific.

DOUBLE THE FUN… The Otters scored double–digit runs for the 10th time in 36 games this season when they hung 18 on Cal State L.A. Saturday afternoon. That mark already ties the 2019 team for No. 5 in the Otter record book. The CSUMB record for double–digit runs in a season is 19 by the 2018 squad.

EIGHT(TEEN) IS NOT ENOUGH… The Otters nearly matched their season high when they scored 18 runs in Saturday's opener versus Cal State L.A. CSUMB scored 19 in a 19–6 win over Stanislaus State on Mar. 27.

ANOTHER SERIES WIN… By taking the first three games from Cal State L.A., the Otters secured their sixth CCAA series win in seven attempts this season (they split at San Francisco State). The last team to take a season series from CSUMB was Cal State L.A., which took 3-of-4 at Reeder Field Feb. 14–16, 2020.

GAME 1 EXTRA BASES… DOUBLES: Chase Lindemann (7), Brady Miguel 2 (12), Kyle Guerra (5), Adrian Collazo (2). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA BASES… DOUBLES: Chase Lindemann (8), Brady Miguel (13), Kyle Guerra (6), Jacob Martin (6). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game series against the Golden Eagles with a single game Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
